Oscar Hughes was a 9 year old boy from York, England. Oscar was a very active boy who showed natural sporting talent, training with Leeds United's youth team in football and also with tennis coaches across the Yorkshire region. Oscar was a season ticket holder at Manchester United, but always preferred to play sport rather than watch.
In February 2013 Oscar was diagnosed with medulloblastama, a type of brain tumour. He had 11 hours of surgery to successfully remove the tumour, followed by a year of gruelling treatment at Leeds General Infirmary including full brain and spine radiotherapy and lots of cycles of chemo. 2014 started positively for Oscar with a clear scan - his family had booked holidays for the summer and started to make plans for his end of treatment party.
Then, at the end of March 2014, Oscar was suddenly and unexpectedly taken ill with stroke-like symptoms and rushed to hospital in an ambulance. A subsequent MRI scan showed that Oscar had relapsed, and that he now had cancer cells all over his brain and spine.
Oscar died on 3rd of May 2014 after a rapid decline in his health.
This page was set up to raise funds for Oscar to go abroad for cutting edge treatment trials not currently available on the NHS in the UK.
We promised that any funds not used towards Oscar's treatment and care would go towards helping other children in the same situation in the future. This is why we are in the proccess of registering Oscar's paediatric braintumour charity in the UK and
we will be partnering with the Brain Tumour Charity to co-fund research into medulloblastoma and other paediatric braintumours. All the funds raised through this site is going into the charity and we hope to keep raising more money in the fight against paediatric brain tumours.
