Hi, my name is Angel and I’m the mother of 4-year-old Elih. My son was diagnosed with Brain Cancer in November 2022. In May of 2022, I took my son to the hospital for facial drooping for which he was misdiagnosed with Bell’s Palsy. The doctor gave him steroids and antibiotics and sent us home. After 4 months with no improvement, we went back to the hospital for a follow-up and the doctor prescribed more antibiotics and steroids. At that time, I refused the meds and asked for a MRI scan. The doctor told me he was 98% sure that there wouldn’t be anything on the MRI scan which he was wrong. Once my son’s MRI scan was over, the doctor pulled me into a side room to inform me that my son had a tumor on his brain and within the next couple days he would need brain surgery. The next couple of days, we had to stay at the hospital as they prepared for his brain surgery, which was a very scary time for me as his mother. The surgery that was supposed to take 8 hours turned into 14 hours. After a long wait which seemed like all day, I finally got to see my son but I wasn’t prepared to see him still sedated and hooked up to a ventilator. They told me my son had suffered a stroke which left him unable to walk or talk, but he was alive and that’s all I could ask for. Just when I thought the hardest part was over, I was told that my son’s tumor came back as brain cancer called ATRT(atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor) which is a rare and very aggressive form cancer.
