Fighting New Jersey Physician-Assisted Suicide Act

On April 12, 2019, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy approved the State Legislature’s passing, by a single vote, of the New Jersey Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act, which came into effect on August 1, 2019. (The act should be more properly called the “New Jersey Physician-Assisted Suicide Act.”)
Unless we take legal action to stop this Act , New Jersey citizens can actually begin dying pursuant to its provisions as early as August 16, 2019.
We are preparing an immediate legal challenge, but in order to pursue that
challenge further, our client needs your help.
Supporting this fight will not only save lives, but spare those doctors who value life above all from having to participate in actions they view as morally abhorrent.
The Medical Society of New Jersey, the oldest professional society in the United States, with over 6,500 members, fought the new law. On July 31st, the day before it went into effect, they released a statement that “MSNJ remains opposed to physicians hastening the death of a patient.”
The MSNJ statement also pointed out that “Regulations implementing this law have yet to be promulgated.” When it was passed in the State Legislature, the Act required that -- in advance of the effective date of August 1 -- no fewer than six (6) regulatory bodies issue rules and regulations describing how the law was to be applied. However, no such required regulations or rules have been issued.
This has left the entire death process in the State of New Jersey wholly unregulated.
Lives are literally at stake with every day that passes. This legal challenge is time sensitive and we need to come together to fight it.
