Fighting for Mater

I was abruptly awoken to 3 gun shots fired on Friday morning about 4 am.  I did not hear any cars pulling away fast, no one was talking and I thought I was dreaming.  It is normal that our cats are outside hunting for voles at night and usually are at the door when we go outside in the morning.  This Friday, Mater was not, we did not see hide nor hair of him all day and figured he was just sleeping off a long night of hunting.  However, Saturday morning I kept hearing him meow and could not figure out where the sound was coming from.  I started walking around trying to find his calls.  When I found Mater in our yard, in the tall grass on the inner edge of our driveway I asked him “Mater what is wrong”?  I bent down and notice right away something was not right.  I told my son to find his dad…Mater was SHOT! (our 11 year old cat) Yes, shot in our yard with a high caliber weapon, not 1 time but 2.  I took him directly to the vet, he was in severe shock, and the doc said nothing could be done until he was stabilized.  Sunday morning they amputated Maters right leg and had to remove extra skin from his stomach from damage where the bullet exited.  We are finishing day 3 in the animal hospital and Mater is fighting for his life, struggle with his breathing.  He has had 2 sets of X-Rays, numerous bags of IV fluids, a blood transfusion, and so much more the past few days, the love at Mt McKinley Animal Hospital is amazing and I know Dr. Nevill is going above and beyond for our family cat and we are so happy he is.  The vet bills are adding up quickly, and we are not done fighting yet.
