Fighting Against Preventable Blindness in Egypt

Donation protected
Help our not-for-profit, Collaborative Vision Foundation, reach our goal of funding 15 blindness preventing surgeries in rural Egypt. Whether you donate $2 or $200 you can eliminate unnecessary pain and suffering for patients with advanced stages of Trachoma.

Who We Are

I am Yassin Nayel, co-founder of Collaborative Vision. I grew up in Cairo, Egypt with an ophthalmologist father. Because of him, I was exposed to diseases of the eye from a young age. After traveling for school, it became clear to me that diseases that were common at home in Egypt were almost non-existent in wealthier nations.  This disparity haunted me as I saw so many people loosing their vision due to a completely preventable cause. I was fortunate to meet a group of like-minded individuals who share my vision. We started Collaborative Vision to work towards eliminating preventable blindness in Egypt one patient at a time. We believe that it is unacceptable that these diseases still persist today.

Why We Focus on Trachoma

Our work focuses on the infectious eye disease of Trachoma, the leading cause of blindness in Egypt. This disease causes the eyelashes to slowly turn inwards and scratch against the eye causing severe pain and progressive vision loss. This disease often affects those in poor, rural regions where there is a lack of medical resources.

What We Do

We see our role as a bridge between those who suffer from the disease in Egypt and those wanting to help from around the globe. Our connections at grassroots level within the country allow us to partner with people we know and trust to provide high quality professional care to patients at an ophthalmology clinic in Cairo. Depending on the severity of symptoms a surgeon can restore vision or prevent blindness for between $50-$250 USD.

Trachoma is still prevalent in rural Egypt and we have an opportunity to work towards curing the more advanced cases of the disease, one at a time. In the process of developing our methods to connect people for the purposes of establishing a diagnosis and a surgical cure, we invested a huge amount of time building a network of people we trust including local community volunteers, screening tool development volunteers and surgical teams. Medical diagnosis and surgical procedures are just as complex in Egypt as they are in any other country. Egypt has the expertise and resources needed to treat advanced cases of Trachoma. Donors provide patients who ordinarily cannot afford this medical care, access to the care they need. Your donation, no matter what size, will directly provide relief from suffering and an enhanced quality of life for Trachoma patients.

Our Goal With Your Help

With your donations, we aim to cover the screening and treatment cost for up to 15 patients. We encourage you to go to our website where you can find detailed information about the disease and our organization: collaborativevisionfoundation.com
