On August 27th Tara and Jason Mahoney went to their routine 20 week where they learned their baby’s heart appeared to be shifted. On September 2nd they received the devastating news that their baby, Braxton, has Right Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia- CDH. In CDH the diaphragm does not develop completely, leaving a hole and allowing abdominal organs to migrate in to the chest. When this occurs it does not leave enough space for the baby’s lungs to develop appropriately therefor making it hard for the baby to breathe.
CDH requires vigorous resuscitation and ventilation within minutes of birth, repair surgery in the following days and lifelong symptoms ranging in severity. Baby Braxton will most likely need ECMO, the highest form of life support, and Tara and Jason are being told he will be too sick for ECMO along with painfully low survival rates.
Given the low odds local hospitals have given them, Tara and Jason have decided to give their baby the best chance at life by temporarily relocating to John’s Hopkins All Children’s hospital in St.Petersburg, Fl in early November. Though this decision was an easy one to make given the survival rates and expertise of the team at JHACH it will be hard emotionally, mentally and financially. Travel, lodging, the Pandemic and uncertainties with the Ronald McDonald House as well as their regular monthly bills should not be what they are worried about while watching their baby fight for his life.
In times like these we all say “What can I do?”. This is where you can start. Please consider donating and helping to take even the smallest amount of financial burden off of this family. Please donate, share and pray for Braxton.
