Once an amateur boxer fighting in the ring at the 2012 National Championship in Trinidad and Tobago is now fighting for his life in an ICU.
Akil Thomas was found brutally beaten and stabbed on September 26, 2020. Along with stab wounds, Akil sustained a traumatic brain injury called Diffuse Anoxal from blunt force trauma to the head. Diffuse Anoxal (DAI) is a brain injury in which scattered lesions occur over a widespread area in white matter matter tracts as well as grey matter. DAI is one of the most common and devastating types of traumatic brain injury and is a major cause of unconsciousness and persistent vegetative state after severe head trauma. It occurs in about half of all cases of severe head trauma and may be the primary damage that occurs in concussion. The outcome is frequently coma, with over 90% of patients with severe DAI never regaining consciousness. Akil also suffers from several fractures to the face which will require surgery, broken ribs, and possible other injuries.
At this point, Akil has received one CT scan, a tracheotomy, and had a feeding tube placed. He is currently at a free hospital in Port of Spain where the care is less than adequate and there is no air conditioning and every item he needs has to be purchased. This is including but not limited to pillows, sheets, blankets, a fan, wash clothes, and wipes. If these items are not provided by family or friends, he will go without. In order for Akil to receive proper care and to further his medical treatment he will need to be transferred to a private facility.
If we can raise enough money to get him transferred, we will need to provide a down payment. This down payment will cover the ambulance transport, a Rapid COVID test, an evaluation by the doctor, and any immediate testing that will need done. Other medical fees such as surgeries, rehabilitation, and other requirements will also need to be covered somehow.
