doris davenport is an educator, writer, activist, and performance poet living in Northeast, GA. As a single woman nearing 70, Affrilachian, and member of the LGBTQ community, doris has seen more than her fair share of struggle and is continuing to endure discrimination, which is why we're asking for help.
Short version: On August 31, 2018 doris gave her apartment manager copies of her earlier concerns and complaints about two white male maintenance workers who had been disrespectful, hostile and threatening, since she moved in (Oct. 2017). Manager #3 passed the documents on to his supervisors. On Sept. 13, doris found a lease termination on her door, clearly a retaliatory response to the supervisor(s) having read her complaints. The notice states that doris had "denied access to stated premises to management personnel." However, this simply isn't true. She asked for workers to be accompanied by management after a history of documented harassment.
The retaliatory lease termination states that doris is required to vacate her apartment by Oct. 12, 2018. For a single senior woman on a very tight budget (her subsidized rent rate is $480, nearly 40% of her income, not including utilities and other bills) with no savings, this is impossible. The money raised will go toward moving supplies (tape, boxes), storage, moving expenses and first and last month's rent on a new apartment or house.
MORE DETAILS. doris is presently retired/unemployed and lives on a very modest income. In Oct. 2017, she moved into a subsidized apartment in a community of seniors. Immediately she encountered problems with a white male maintenance worker, whose behavior was "too familiar, bullying, disrespectful, invasive and even physically threatening." She reported his conduct to the complex manager, who did nothing to remedy the situation. Another manager replaced the first one, and doris forwarded her concerns in writing to the new manager. This new manager was "basically dismissive" and "insulting" claiming the worker was 'just trying to help.' Finally, a third manager onboarded in July 2018. By this time, doris had unpleasant interactions with another maintenance worker who "who decided, apropos of nothing, to warn me about 'predators.'" Concerned about this workers' motives, doris went to the newest manager and requested that neither of the problematic maintenance workers enter her apartment unless accompanied by management, which is not an unreasonable request.
