On May 23rd, 2017, Anthony and Sharon Smith received a call no parents ever want to receive. It was an Intensive Care Unit calling to say, “Your child was been in a life threatening car accident,” followed by three words that changed the course of Andersen’s life: traumatic brain injury.
Finally, after numerous tests and MRIs, on June 07, 2017, the grim prognosis was given. Andersen has suffered Intraparenchymal hemorrhage (IPH), a form of bleeding within the brain. To put it simply, he has severe damage to his brain that will not allow him to function normally.
Andersen is not able to do any of the basic things we take for granted like walking, talking, or even feeding ourselves. At this point, doctors have determined that Andersen will need Brain Rehabilitation to restore functions that can be repaired and to learn to do things differently for those functions that cannot. On average, the total cost for Brain Rehabilitation per patient is approximately $60,000 for inpatient therapy. This just the beginning! Outpatient rehabilitation may last for weeks, months or years, and the costs range from $600 to $1,000 a day (Brain Injury Association of America).
