Help Hawaii Healthcare Workers Fight COVID-19

Worldwide, COVID-19 has impacted the day-to-day lives of everyone. This is indeed a form or war, not of nuclear arms, but a war against the unseen. Healthcare workers are at the frontlines of this war, constantly fighting for the lives and well-being of the infected. However, they are getting infected by the thousands. Over 4,800 healthcare workers in Italy have tested positive, which accounts for nearly 10% of the country’s total cases.
Healthcare workers are particularly vulnerable for numerous reasons. First, coronavirus is highly contagious and medical staff members are exposed to more viral particles than the general public. Second, the combination of stress and long working hours can take a toll on their immune systems, making them more vulnerable than normal. Perhaps the greatest contributing factor is the global shortage of PPE (personal protective equipment), which includes: masks, googles, protective garments, etc. Hospitals are scrambling to obtain protective gear before their emergency stash dwindles to nothing. In many places in the mainland, healthcare providers have been reusing the same mask for days, and many more face patients unprotected.
The need for PPE especially pertains to the state of Hawaii. Hawaii, being over 2,000 miles from the nearest land mass, heavily relies on the US Mainland for supplies. With the US Mainland already facing huge shortages of PPE, Hawaii is of no exception. Community spread has already been proven in Hawaii, and our infected numbers continue to climb. We need to quickly take action to protect the healthcare workers who continue to fight for Hawaii’s safety.
I am a board certified nurse practitioner working at a local health facility. I have direct access to suppliers of NIOSH certified N95s and FDA approved surgical masks. All donations will be directly used to buy these supplies and will be distributed to the healthcare facilities who need them. Our initial goal is to raise $10,000 which can provide about 15,000 surgical masks or 3,000 surgical N95s. We invite you to participate and help our courageous medical teams who are risking their lives daily to guard the safety of our Ohana.
