My mother, Renee Hoffman, has been areested for burglary and possession of stolen property. She has been held in jail since Saturday, Sept. 27th. She is on oxygen, and walks outsude the house with a walker or cane. She has COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, heart disease (she's had two heart attacks, two strokes, and has a stent), diabetes, lymphedema, neuropathy, irritable bowel, two rods and a basket, having broken her back in 2001, a cyst in her brain, and has survived cancer three times, most recently a GBM (a type of brain cancer.) I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things. She is also bipolar, and has attempted suicide previously.
She has been deprived of all her medications since being arrested, from the pain meds required for her back and legs, to the psych meds for bipolar. The withdrawal has caused her to drop 25 pounds in a week from vomiting and diarrhea. She has been left in a cell full of puke and diarrhea for hours at a time, then told she's a 'pain in the ass' when they finally come to clean her cell, and sent to visitation with diarrhea still on her. (This with open sores on her legs from the lymphedema.) Her legs are so swollen now that she's losing sensation in them.
My mother isn't perfect - she's made her share of mistakes. I'll never deny that. But I know she didn't do this - she was with me the day it happened. And even if that weren't true - NO ONE deserves to be treated this way. The SPCA would take your *dog* away if they caught you leaving it in its own feces.
She is reliant on a public defender, who is NOT interested in fighting for her. Her original bail was $150, 000. It has since been lowered to $25,000, meaning she needs $2500. There are no bail-bondsmen in Illinois. (They are illegal.) She and I both live on disablity, and my step-father makes $400 a week, which barely pays the bills, let alone $2500 bail.
Any help, even $5, is GREATLY appreciated by me and her. Even if you can't donate, please pass it on. We need to get her out ASAP - as it is now, she'll almost certainly need to be hospitalized once she's released. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I have nothing to hide.
