Lavender is a strong and gentle young girl. She loves dancing to Tracey Chapman, playing at the beach and eating chicken drumsticks.
At around 18months old Lavender began having epileptic seizures. These increased to the point where she was having in excess of 100 seizures each day. After many months of following Dr's recommendations and watching her seizures increase, I made the decision to take a different path. Substantial research and skype consults with specialist Doctor's in the U.S and Australia, led me to radically alter Lavenders diet. Within 4 weeks her seizures dropped 95%. Now 8 weeks after the diet change, she is having her first seizure free days. But there is still work to do...
All of these seizures have taken a toll on Lavenders development and neurological system. The specialists we have been in regular consultation with have highly recommended Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, as part of a program to aid in recovery. This therapy will mean higher concentrations of oxygen are available to lavenders brain. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a proven and effective treatment in many parts of the world including the U.S and Europe. Like many of the interventions we are implementing for Lavender, it is not yet recognised here in Australia for Lavenders situation. This means I am solely responsible for the funding.
With daily access to a hyperbaric chamber, Lavender has a great opportunity to fully heal and reach her full potential. The cost of a new chamber is over $20 000.
The past 18 months have been challenging. It has been week after week of therapists and medical appointments. This is not how a 2 year old should be spending her days. Thankfully Lavender is not afraid of hard work :) Infact I would say most of her short life has been this. Things that typically come easily for others, have required more effort on her part. I look forward to a time when her days are not filled with therapy and appointments and she can get on with a joy filled childhood.
