Wij zijn de ouders van onze dappere dochter Lilly. Lilly heeft epilepsie, en dat betekent dat elke nacht voor ons gepaard gaat met grote onzekerheid en angst. Haar aanvallen treden vaak 's nachts op, juist wanneer wij ze niet direct kunnen zien of horen. 
 
Voor Lilly is de Nightwatch letterlijk van levensbelang. Dit is een geavanceerde armband die haar hartslag en bewegingen tijdens de slaap continu bewaakt. Zodra er een zware aanval wordt gedetecteerd, krijgen wij direct een alarm. Zonder dit hulpmiddel lopen we het risico dat we een gevaarlijke aanval te laat opmerken. 
 
Hoewel neurologen het belang van de Nightwatch onderstrepen, wordt dit apparaat helaas nog steeds niet vergoed door de zorgverzekering. De kosten voor de aanschaf bedragen ongeveer €1.900, een bedrag dat wij op dit moment niet alleen kunnen dragen, maar dat wel nú nodig is voor Lilly’s veiligheid. 
 
Terwijl de meeste ouders hun kind met een gerust hart naar bed brengen, begint voor ons dan de spannendste tijd van de dag. We slapen momenteel 'met één oog open' en schrikken van ieder geluidje via de babyfoon. Elke nacht is een uitputtingsslag tussen de angst om een aanval te missen en de noodzaak om zelf ook even te rusten. 

Soms staan we midden in de nacht aan haar bed, alleen om te checken of ze nog rustig ademt. Die constante staat van paraatheid is hartverscheurend en mentaal loodzwaar. De Nightwatch zou ons de broodnodige zekerheid geven dat we direct gewaarschuwd worden bij gevaar, zodat we er voor Lilly kunnen zijn op de momenten dat ze ons het hardst nodig heeft.

1. Directe Veiligheid en Levensreddende Signalering 

Epilepsieaanvallen in de nacht zijn onvoorspelbaar en potentieel levensgevaarlijk. De NightWatch is een medisch hulpmiddel dat specifiek is ontworpen om zware motorische aanvallen tijdens de slaap te detecteren door continu de hartslag en beweging te meten.

Tijdige interventie: Het apparaat waarschuwt verzorgers direct bij een aanval. Dit maakt onmiddellijke medische hulp mogelijk, wat cruciaal is om complicaties zoals status epilepticus of SUDEP (plotseling onverwacht overlijden bij epilepsie) te voorkomen. 

2. Monitoring van 'Stille' Aanvallen 

Niet alle aanvallen gaan gepaard met veel geluid. Zonder geavanceerde apparatuur zoals de NightWatch blijven deze aanvallen onopgemerkt, zelfs met een babyfoon. De NightWatch detecteert afwijkingen in het hartritme die vaak voorafgaan aan de uiterlijk zichtbare aanval, waardoor hulpverleners eerder ter plaatse kunnen zijn. 

3. Impact op het Gezin en Welzijn 

Het leven met een kind met zware epilepsie betekent vaak chronisch slaapgebrek en constante angst bij de ouders. 

Rust en Herstel: Gebruikers geven aan dat de NightWatch hen de rust geeft om weer te kunnen slapen, wetende dat ze gewaarschuwd worden als het misgaat.

The Nightwatch would give us the much-needed assurance that we'd be alerted immediately if danger occurred, so we could be there for Lilly when she needed us most.
