Help for Djo's Bio Farm

The Project:
This campaign’s objective is to help pave the way for a new organic chicken farm that ‘Djo’ would run himself. Starting with a handful of chickens, the plan is to let them lay eggs, raise the chicks and later sell larger numbers of eggs and grown-up chickens to residents around Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and nearby hotels. Aside from the fact that a farm like this will help provide a steady source of food for ‘Djos’ family, a larger number of eggs and chickens would allow ‘Djo’ to finally create something sustainable that will be profitable within a couple months creating financial stability. The everyday life in Burkina Faso is tough and we want to pave the way for ‘Djo’ such that he can shape his future and eventually leave poverty.

The project has recently started as ‘Djo’ was offered to participate in a free training course called ‘Élevage Bio’ about appropriate and organic chicken farming. He learned all necessary basics and therefore the first 10 animals (8 chickens and two cocks) were bought which ‘Djo’ is now taking care of in his small backyard. A few days ago, the first eggs were collected completing another milestone.

As soon as the financing for the project is secured, next steps include building a proper shelter, buying equipment and more chicks. Also, a logistical road will need to be established allowing ‘Djo’ to sell eggs and chickens on a larger scale. How do we know Djo?
About Djo:
Abdoulaye Soura, or ‘Djo’ for his friends, was born in Banfora and currently resides in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital city. Being the youngest of three siblings, he has never had the chance to study for a professional career, not to mention studying at university. However, ‘Djo’ has been managing to struggle through the difficult everyday life in Burkina Faso for the past 34 years. Recently, he started his own project to establish a chicken farm from scratch to finally gain independence and build something long-term. In order to help his dream become reality, ‘Djo’ will need our support which is why we have launched this campaign.

About the friendship with Djo
During a three-week long group trip through Burkina Faso, Roman and ‘Djo’ met when ‘Djo’ accompanied the group as a local resident almost every day. “We spent three weeks together and ‘Djo’ really enjoyed helping me and the group with all sorts of things in Burkina. One day ‘Djo’ even invited us to his parents’ place where we got the chance to meet both his mother and his older brother. During our time in Burkina, ‘Djo’ was always there when we needed his support or advice in such an unfamiliar environment.”
After the trip, Roman and ‘Djo’ managed to keep in touch and eventually joined forces to help get the project up to speed.
About Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso is a poverty-stricken country located in western Africa, which offers very few natural resources. There basically is a lack of everything. The economy heavily relies on poorly developed agriculture, around 80% of employees work in the agriculture sector. During the past years, the export of gold has increased, the broad population however cannot benefit from that at all. Despite little progress made, around 40% of the population still live below the national poverty benchmark with ‘Djo’ being one of them.
Just for comparison:
- The average income in Burkina Faso is 145€ per month (which is around 93% less compared to France)
- A small beer costs 1€
Road Forward and Costs involved:
We calculated that ‘Djo’ will need 4000€ to carry out the entire project. The rough cost breakdown includes:
- 2000€ for the shelter including all equipment
- 600€ for all animals and costs for the veterinary
- 1400€ for logistics and transport

Abdoulaye Soura, Djo pour les amis, est né à Banfora et actuellement il habite à Ouagadougou, la capital du Burkina Faso. Dernier enfant d’une famille de 3, il n’a pas eu l'opportunité d’aller à l’université. Tout de même, à 34 ans et avec un enfant, il a commencé son projet de créer une ferme de poulets et œufs. Son rêve c'est d'être independent et d'avoir les moyens pour tout sa famille.
Projet:
L’objectif du projet est de créer une ferme d'élevage de poulets pour pouvoir vendre les œufs ainsi que les poulets aux habitants de Ouagadougou et aux hôtels de la région. En plus de la nourriture, cela fournira une stabilité financière et des perspectives de futur pour Djo et sa famille.
Le projet est déjà lancé. Djo a suivi la formation “Élevage Bio” pour ancrer les concepts. Il élèvent 10 animaux (8 poules et 2 coques) dans un petit endroit à côté de la maison. Il fait une semaine ils ont commencé à récupérer des oeufs et à faire la vente aux proches.
Une fois affranchi ce premier objectif et en affirmant le succès du projet, le pas suivant est d'agrandir l'endroit d'élevage, l’achat de plus d’animaux et renforcer la logistique pour pouvoir livrer les commandes.

Lors d’un voyage de 3 semaines au Burkina Faso, Roman a fait la connaissance avec Djo, il était son “guide touristique” tout au long du voyage. “Nous avons partagé la vie pendant ces 3 semaines, il était super heureux de nous montrer la vie au Burkina et il nous a même invité à sa maison avec sa famille. Il a géré notre séjour à Bobo en restant avec nous et nous aidant en tout moment.” affirma Roman 3 ans plus tard. Roman et Djo restaient en contacte et il y quelques mois que les deux ont commencé de planifier le projet ensembles.
Le Burkina Faso est un pays du Sahel à faible revenu et aux ressources naturelles limitées. Son économie repose essentiellement sur l’agriculture (80 % de la population active), même si les exportations aurifères ont progressé. Malgré des progrès, le pays a 40,1 % de la population vivant sous le seuil national de pauvreté.
Pour se faire un idée:
- Le salaire moyen au Burkina Faso est de 145€ / mois (-93% pra France)
- Le prix de d’une bière (33cl) est de 1€ (-35% pra France)
Coût:
Nous avons calculé que Djo aura besoin de 4000€ pour mener à bien l’ensemble du projet. La répartition approximative des coûts est:
- 2000€ pour la nouvelle construction
- 600€ pour les animaux
- 1400€ pour la logistique et le transport

Abdoulaye Soura, Djo para los amigos, nació en Banfora y actualmente vive en Ouagadougou. Siendo el hijo menor de una familia de 3, no tuvo la oportunidad de ir a la universidad. Aún así, a los 34 años y con un hijo, ha empezado su proyecto de construir una granja de gallinas y huevos.
Proyecto:
El objetivo del proyecto es crear una granja de gallinas para poder vender tanto los huevos como los pollitos a los habitantes de Ouaga y a los hoteles de la región. Además de los alimentos, este proyecto dará una estabilidad financiera y perspectivas de futuro a Djo y a su familia.
El proyecto ya ha empezado. Djo y su equipo han hecho una formación de “Crianza bio” para anclar los conceptos. Ya tiene 10 animales (8 gallinas y 2 gallos) en un pequeño cobertizo al lado de su casa. Hace una semana empezaron a tener los primeros huevos y a venderlos a la comunidad
Una vez alcanzado este primer objetivo y afirmando el éxito del proyecto, el siguiente paso es agrandar el sitio de crianza y la compra de nuevos animales además de invertir en el transporte para poder llevar los pedidos.
Relación / contexto:
Durante un viaje de 3 semanas en Burkina Faso, Roman conoció a Djo, su “guía turístico” durante todo el viaje. “Compartimos la vida durante 3 semanas, estaba super contento de podernos enseñar su vida en Burkina y nos invitó a su casa con su familia. Se encargó de toda nuestra estancia a Bobo y se quedó con nosotros por ayudarnos en todo momento.” Afirma Roman 3 años después.
Burkina Faso es un país del Sahel con pocos ingresos y recursos naturales limitados. Su economía depende básicamente de la agricultura (80% de la población activa), aunque las explotaciones de oro han aumentado. Aún y los progresos el 40,1% de la población vive por debajo de la línea nacional de pobreza extrema.

- El salario medio en Burkina faso es de 145€/mes (-93% con respecto a Francia)
- El precio de una cerveza (33cl) es de 1€ (-35% con respecto a Francia)

Über das Projekt:
Das Ziel dieses Projektes ist es eine kleine Hühnerfarm aufzubauen. Ausgehend von wenigen Hühnern sieht das Konzept vor Eier zu produzieren, Küken zu züchten und später sowohl die Eier als auch die ausgewachsenen Hühner an Bewohner Ouagadougous und umliegende Hotels zu verkaufen. Neben der Nahrungsproduktion für sich und seine Familie wird eine größere Anzahl an Eiern und Hühnern mittelfristig eine finanzielle Unabhängigkeit ermöglichen. Der Alltag in Burkina Faso ist unglaublich hart und wir möchten die Grundlage dafür schaffen, dass ‚Djo‘ seine Zukunft selbst gestalten kann.
Das Projekt hat bereits begonnen. ‚Djo‘ hat kürzlich einen Kurs namens ‚Élevage Bio‘ besucht, um die Grundlagen der Zucht von Experten zu lernen. Die ersten 10 Tiere (8 Hühner, zwei Hähne) wurden finanziert und werden bereits in einem kleinen Hinterhof aufgezogen.
Vor einigen Tagen konnten die ersten Eier gesammelt und verkauft werden.
Über Djo:
Abdoulaye Soura, oder ‚Djo‘ für seine Freunde, wurde in Banfora geboren und lebt aktuell in Ouagadougou, der Hauptstadt Burkina Fasos. Als letztgeborener dreier Kinder hatte er nie das Privileg eine richtige Ausbildung zu genießen, geschweige denn ein Studium zu absolvieren. Trotzdem hat sich ‚Djo‘ die letzten 34 Jahre Tag für Tag durchgekämpft und kürzlich ein Projekt begonnen mit dem Ziel, eine Hühnerfarm aufzubauen und diese auch selbständig zu betreiben. Hierfür braucht es aber ein Startkapital, wobei wir ihn unterstützen.
Zur Freundschaft zwischen Roman und ‚Djo‘:
Während einer dreiwöchigen Gruppenreise durch Burkina Faso hat Roman ‚Djo‘ kennen gelernt, der Roman praktisch jeden Tag als Ortskundiger unterstützt und begleitet hat. „Wir haben knapp drei Wochen den Alltag zusammen verbracht und es hat ‚Djo‘ viel Spaß gemacht, mir das Leben in Burkina zu zeigen. Eines Tages hat er uns sogar in sein Elternhaus eingeladen, wo wir auch seine Mutter und seinen Bruder kennen lernen konnten. Während der Zeit in Bobo-Dioulasso war ‚Djo‘ immer an unserer Seite und hat uns bei allem unterstützt“.
Nach der Reise sind Roman und ‚Djo‘ in Kontakt geblieben, schließlich gab es die Idee, gemeinsam an diesem Projekt zu arbeiten.
Über das Land:
Burkina Faso ist ein bitterarmes Land der westafrikanischen Sahelzone mit wenigen natürlichen Ressourcen, es mangelt an allem. Die Wirtschaft des Landes beruht größtenteils auf einfacher Landwirtschaft, 80% der arbeitenden Bevölkerung ist in diesem Sektor tätig. In den letzten Jahren hat zwar der Goldexport zugenommen, hiervon kann die Bevölkerung aber de facto nicht profitieren. Trotz einiger Fortschritte leben nach wie vor rund 40% der Bevölkerung unterhalb der nationalen Armutsgrenze. ‚Djo‘ ist einer von ihnen.
Zum Vergleich:
- Das mittlere Einkommen in Burkina Faso beträgt 145€ pro Monat (entspricht 93% weniger als in Frankreich)
- Ein kleines Bier kostet 1€
Ausblick und Kosten:
Sobald die ersten Meilensteine erreicht und die Weiterführung des Projekts gesichert sind, bestehen die nächsten Schritte darin, die Aufzucht auszubauen, mehr Küken zu kaufen und die Logistik hinsichtlich der Auslieferung von Bestellungen zu verbessern.
Insgesamt benötigt das Projekt 4000 € für Folgendes:
- 2000€ für den Neubau eines geeigneten Unterstands samt Ausstattung
- 600€ für alle Tiere und den Tierarzt
- 1400€ für Logistik und Transport rund um den Verkauf
