<div>Hola, soy Maria Fernanda Acero Pons, aunque muchos me conocen como Fer Pons. Me dedico a crear contenido sobre becas, experiencias internacionales y voluntariados, y a dar mentorías a jóvenes que sueñan con alcanzar sus metas alrededor del mundo. Mi vida ha girado en torno a ayudar a otros a encontrar oportunidades para cumplir sus sueños, pero hoy soy yo quien necesita pedir ayuda.

<div>Desde noviembre de 2019, he enfrentado una batalla difícil contra un tumor en mi médula espinal. Este tumor, un lipoma fusiforme en las vértebras L3 y L4, ha requerido ya dos cirugías muy invasivas. Cada una de esas operaciones ha venido con un precio muy alto, no solo en lo físico, sino también en lo emocional y económico. A pesar de haberlo dado todo en mi recuperación, el camino ha sido largo y doloroso. El dolor crónico sigue siendo parte de mi día a día imposibilitando vivir una vida normal, hay días en los que no puedo levantarme de la cama, lo que afecta mi capacidad para trabajar, socializar, o simplemente disfrutar de una vida cotidiana relativamente normal. A pesar de que trato de que el dolor no controle mi vida, la realidad es que tanto fisíca como emocionalmente me está afectando más de lo que puedo soportar, pero me he negado a rendirme. A la fecha llevo ya dos cirugías, una en noviembre del 2019 y la segunda en diciembre de 2022.

<div>Hoy, necesito someterme a una tercera cirugía, la más complicada hasta ahora. Además del lipoma fusiforme que no me han podido quitar por completo en las primeras cirugías, nuevos pequeños tumores de agua se han formado debido al proceso de cicatrización que están presionando las raíces nerviosas, lo que ha aumentado significativamente el dolor y empeorado mi capacidad motora ya que he perdido fuerza significativamente en las dos piernas, a pesar de que aún puedo caminar, esta operación es mi mejor oportunidad para reducir el dolor que llevo años soportando y para recuperar la fuerza en mis piernas. Sin embargo, Los costos médicos son demasiado altos y mi seguro no lo cubre debido a que se trata de un padecimiento congénito. Además, en el seguro social, me recomendaron no realizarla ahí, ya que se trata de una cirugía que requiere un alto nivel de especialidad.

<div>Acudí a un doctor particular, quien me ha dado la esperanza de que esta será mi última cirugía, con la promesa de mejorar mi calidad de vida de manera significativa. Sin embargo, no puedo hacerlo sola. He logrado mucho por mi cuenta, pero ahora necesito el apoyo de quienes puedan estar dispuestos a tenderme una mano.

He hecho todo lo posible para seguir adelante, a pesar de los gastos que aún estoy cubriendo de cirugías pasadas, medicamentos y fisioterapia. Ahora, me enfrento a este nuevo reto y sé que no puedo detenerme aquí.

<div>Since November 2019, I have been fighting a difficult battle against a tumor in my spinal cord. This tumor, a fusiform lipoma in vertebrae L3 and L4, has already required two highly invasive surgeries. Each of those operations has come with a high price, not only physically but also emotionally and financially. Despite giving everything in my recovery, the journey has been long and painful. Chronic pain remains a part of my daily life, making it impossible to live normally. There are days when I can’t get out of bed, which affects my ability to work, socialize, or simply enjoy a relatively normal life. Even though I try not to let the pain control my life, the reality is that it affects me both physically and emotionally more than I can bear, but I have refused to give up.

<div>Today, I need to undergo a third surgery, the most complicated one yet. In addition to the fusiform lipoma that they could not completely remove in the first surgeries, new small water tumors have formed due to the healing process that is putting pressure on the nerve roots, which has significantly increased the pain and worsened my motor ability. Since, I have significantly lost strength in both legs, and even though I can still walk, this won't be the case if I don't do the surgery. This operation is my best chance to reduce the pain I’ve endured for years and to regain strength in my legs. However, the cost is too high, and my insurance doesn’t cover it because it is a congenital condition. Additionally, at public healthcare, I was advised not to have it done there, as it is a surgery that requires a high level of specialization.

<div>I sought out a private doctor, who has given me hope that this will be my last surgery, with the promise of significantly improving my quality of life. However, I cannot do this alone. I have achieved a lot on my own, but now I need the support of those who are willing to lend me a hand.

<div>Previous recoveries have been long and challenging, but I have never given up. I’ve done everything possible to keep going, despite the expenses that I’m still covering from past surgeries, medications, and physiotherapy. Now, I face this new challenge, and I know I can’t stop here.
