If you’re reading this, thank you for taking the time. My family and I truly appreciate it. On our way to a family vacation in San Antonio, our lives were turned upside down. At a checkpoint, my stepdad was detained in front of my mom, my sisters, and me. We watched helplessly as they took him away. My stepdad has done everything in his power to obtain legal status—waiting years, paying thousands of dollars, and finally earning a work permit after so much effort. Yet, due to changes in immigration policy under the current administration, the very program that gave him hope was suddenly eliminated. He and my mom were never informed of this devastating change. Right now, my mom is doing everything she can. She’s working and studying full-time in her master’s program while completing her clinicals. But she cannot do this alone. The financial burden of hiring a lawyer to fight for my stepdad’s return, along with supporting my sisters, is overwhelming. I know times are hard for many people, and not everyone can give.
