Feeding Fleet Families

Hello Fleet Families,
During the COVID-19 crisis many Fleet families are experiencing food security issues. Almost 25% of the school population, or about 150 Fleet students qualify for free and reduced lunch. And that number would likely be higher if measured today given the number of parents who are now newly unemployed or under-employed. The school has identified 45 families who need food resources and has been sending them $50 grocery gift cards every two weeks since March. Our wonderful school counselor, Ms. Upton, and Spanish language resource, Ms. Reyes, have distributed over $12,000 in grocery gift cards through grants and an Arlington-wide GoFundMe project that was started at the beginning of the pandemic. But those funds have been depleted, and Ms. Upton and Ms. Reyes have said that the greatest need for our families continues to be food. For example, within our community we have a single mother of 3 who is newly out of work. One of her children is immune-compromised and the mother is unable to return to work in the near term. This is just one example of many situations our families are facing right now.
To help the families closest to us we have set up this GoFundMe account to raise money that will be used to distribute gift cards to Fleet families who are continuing to experience food security issues. Ms. Upton and Ms. Reyes will distribute gift cards to families who they identify as having the highest needs. Many of these families have also been connected to other Arlington resources, such as those providing rent and utility assistance, food assistance, and more. But gaps still exist. Please consider contributing any amount you can help to our families in need during this pandemic. We will purchase gift cards on a weekly basis and will continue to do so as long as funds are available, and the need exists. Please consider donating what you are able to give and consider giving each month. Fleet is also collecting gently used clothing, which can be dropped off on June 8 between 9-12 and 1-4 or June 10 between 9-12.
Many, many thanks. The Fleet community is strong, and we appreciate your support.
Note: The Fleet PTA is unable to collect donations for this cause due to our 501(c)3 status. Contributions through GoFundMe are not tax deductible.
