Help 5280 High School Grow Fresh Food

Save A Student- A Fictional Narrative

Written by Tanaja Payne, 9th grade

There is a state. In that state, there is a city. In that city, there is a school. And in that school, there's a boy named Thomas. Thomas is a normal kid. But, bullies always seem to point out the parts where he's not normal, where he's flawed. Today Thomas walks down the hall. The bullies also walk down the hall moving closer and closer toward normal Thomas. They catch up to Thomas and push him into a wall.

“Thomas you are a loser,” they shout to hurt his feelings. This time it doesn't work. But, the bullies do this every day after that. They whittle away at him little by little until he's nothing. Until he feels abnormal and everyone around him thinks so too. This isn't right. Thomas shouldn't feel like his ears are too big, that his haircut is stupid, or that he talks weird. Thomas’s parents should not have found him watching a video of how to tie a noose. But, maybe if the school would have did a better job at building its community up, teaching kids to respect each other, this story could be different. There is a school and in that school, there is a community. And in that community, there is a boy and his friends.

Why

Ever wonder why the world suffers so much bullying? Why students young and old suffer from bullying? The rates of bullying are at an all-time high, and Denver is no exception to this trend. Stop bullying.gov says almost 1 in 3 students have been bullied! What if there was a way to stop bullying, without getting directly involved?

The truth is, there is a solution and it’s actually quite simple. On a basic level, most bullies are just seeking acceptance and a sense of belonging. But That’s where it gets a lot more complicated. Thankfully, if you are still reading this, it’s because you are still interested and because you still have the power to change the fast growing rate of bullying in the world.

Help us prevent bullying. Now, if you’re thinking “Oh great, if I want to help, I’m going to have to get directly involved.” But guess what! That’s not the case, due to the students at 5280 High School, they have graciously gone out of their way to create a solution and a system that allows people like you, who want to help make a huge impact, without getting directly involved.

How

The solution and system that 5280 students are creating, is quite easy to be a part of. All it takes is donating to this campaign in order to raise funds for the 5280 CommUnity Project. This project allows students to create a machine that will help and benefit many people. They’ll use a 3D printer to create a Hydroponic System. This system is used to create fresh food for the whole school's community. Now, this might sound irrelevant, however, keep reading for a few more seconds.

Fresh food is more important than you think. Not just because it’s better for you physically, it also actually creates small niche communities. There was an interesting case of this exact occurrence happening decades ago, known as the Roseto Mystery. This proved that connecting on a deeper level through a sense of Community, can help people never look towards bullying as an alternative. It makes sense because when you are a part of a deeply connected community around fresh food, bullying doesn’t even seem like an option. Food brings us all together!

What

This is why we invite you to make a donation to help students at 5280 High School 3D print a Hydroponic System. That will ultimately allow them to create and be part of a deeply connected community based around fresh food. This will allow the students to grow together all year long. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to make a HUGE impact on the students of 5280 and their community which you could be a part of. Please donate, every bit helps and will make a difference.

The funds for this campaign will be going to:

$600 The Prusa 3D Printer
$200 5 Roles of Bioplastic Filament
$700 Homebiogas system
$60 Seedling Trays
$80 Lights
$80 Pumps
$100 An Arduino
$280 Perks

If the goal of $2,100 is not reached by January 1st, 2019 then this project will still take place, the funds will be used to first pay for perks and then to buy pumps, lights, seedling trays, seeds and PVC pipes for a cheaper Hydroponic system one of our students found.

If extra funds are raised, they will be spent on getting more and or better 3D printers to allow the students to prototype faster as well as help other communities grow their own fresh food. On top of that, there is a multitude of other things that could help this project really make a greater impact. One of the biggest would be a greenhouse trailer which would allow the students to present this project to many other schools or kitchens and so on.

Perks

All of the perks will be made with together by the students

$1=Newsletter on campaign updates

$5=Button/Pin

$25=T-Shirt

$35=6 Pack of Jam, Salsa and or Pickles

We would really like to see this project inspire other schools to start growing their own CommUnity and that is why we have included these last perks to help them get this set up too!

$210=3D printed hydroponic system that grows 6 plants plus, two months of liquid fertilizer from 5280's Homebiogas system, a small seedling tray, a light, and an Arduino

$2,100= The Prusa 3D Printer, 5 roles of Bioplastic Filament, Homebiogas system, Seedling Trays, Lights, Pumps and an Arduino
