In mid-March, Ellen Brooks Shehata gathered a group of friends to donate meals from local restaurants in New Jersey to their local healthcare workers fighting through the COVID-19 pandemic. Ellen's initiative, and the tireless efforts of her husband Dr. Alexandre Shehata on rotation in the ICU, inspired us to take that effort down to the VA/DC/MD area. We ran into FeedtheFightDC, an organization with the same goals that has done amazing work for the DC area, during our third donation at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and now we are working to spread the "FeedtheFight" effort independently across MD and Northern VA.
As Feed the Fight MD, we are working to support Maryland and Northern Virginia heroes, from healthcare workers to first responders, during the COVID-19 pandemic by delivering meals from local restaurants. This effort supports both the heroes keeping us safe and healthy during this time of crisis and our local restaurants that need the business. In our first week at the end of March, we provided 145 meals to four different hospitals while supporting four local restaurants (shout out Sammy's Italian Pizza Kitchen, Sweetwater Tavern, Jetties, Ekiben). Thank you to all our amazing donors and friends that helped make this happen.
While we initially raised money to fund this effort through Venmo, our work has grown considerably from the first small group of friends that started it and now requires other methods to receive donations. This GoFundMe and continued Venmo contributions (@FeedtheFight-MD) will support further meal deliveries throughout MD and Northern Virginia for as long as this pandemic lasts. We want to continue this mission to keep bringing smiles to our local heroes' faces. For them to know our community is thinking of them during this time is crucial!
