Feed first responders & keep Sunrise Bistro open

Donation protected
THE ASK: Please donate to help us deliver hope to the local doctors, nurses, paramedics, police officers, fire fighters on the front lines of the fight against the novel coronavirus here in the East Bay.

Funds will be used by Sunrise Bistro & Catering to procure, cook, package and deliver fresh, healthy meals (see meal examples below) to local hospitals, clinics, testing facilities, etc. to feed the many first responders working extended hours treating and healing our neighbors, friends, and family that have been impacted by COVID-19.

In this time of urgent need, we are asking for our community's support. Without a significant influx of orders by the end of this week, we will be forced to begin laying off a majority of our team and closing our doors.

Any donation amount will be accepted:

               $1 = funds 1/15 of a meal
               $15 = funds 1 meal
               $150 = funds 10 meals
               $1,500 = funds 100 meals

We have a list of institutions that we plan to deliver to (e.g. Kaiser Hospitals, John Muir Walnut Creek, Highland Hospital Oakland, Martinez County Hospital, Walnut Creek PD & FD), but also want your suggestions.

100% of donations will be used to fund meals and their deliveries. Please check back as we will be posting video and photo updates of our deliveries. #SmallBusinessRelief

THE PURPOSE: COVID-19 has hit our country hard. As the number of individuals requiring hospitalization increase, the crisis will continue to take a greater toll on the essential personnel (e.g. doctors, nurses, paramedics, fire fighters, police officers, etc.).

The first responders on the front lines fighting this novel virus have taken on daunting responsibilities at significant personal risk. As they rise to confront the growing pandemic, our community too shall rise to support these heroes.

With your help, we will deliver them healthy, delicious, locally cooked meals… but more importantly, we will provide them with HOPE and assurance that they are appreciated!

SUNRISE BISTRO NEEDS YOUR HELP
: Sunrise Bistro and Catering has been serving the East Bay from downtown Walnut Creek for almost four decades. We’ve employed thousands over the past 39 years, and currently have 70+ employees (e.g. service workers, cooks, bakers, drivers, etc).

We humbly request your help to not only provide meals to our local first responders, but to also help keep our workforce employed.

This week is critical for us. Like many restaurants, we are facing a great deal of financial uncertainty. Due to state ordinances for "social distancing" we have closed our restaurant (curbside pickup remains available) and almost all event catering has been cancelled.

To be clear, on a macro level we support all efforts to “flatten the curve”, however on a micro level this crisis certainly has the potential to put Sunrise Bistro & Catering out-of-business, and the rest of our 70+ employees out of work as early as next week (3/30 - 4/6).

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1981 by Cindy Gershen (Stein), Sunrise Bistro and Catering has been committed to serving fresh, sustainable, homemade foods since day one. At our restaurant / catering kitchen in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek, we make almost everything we serve from scratch; from our breads and pastries to our salad dressings. We are leaders in sustainable practices, and source organic foods wherever possible. We believe strongly in the "real food philosophy" and minimize the addition of any processed foods or ingredients.

My name is Joe Stein. I am the owner and CEO of Sunrise Bistro & Catering. In June 2014 I purchased the business from my mother, Cindy. I grew up around Sunrise, have worked every job in the organization, and currently operate as General Manager.

I'm a Walnut Creek native. I attended Walnut Heights Elementary, Las Lomas High School, and ultimately graduated from Saint Mary's College in Moraga with a Masters in Business Administration. I am a veteran of the United States Marine Corp with two combat tours of duty (Afghanistan 2001-2002 & Iraq 2003). Sunrise is a proud veteran owned business. I have an amazingly supportive wife, Chelsea, and three kids that attend Walnut Creek public schools.

My business partner, Ty Pearce, is the Head Chef and also my first cousin! We are truly a multi-generational, family owned small business

All this being said, in order to keep our doors open, we now need your help.

Please consider donating and if you have any questions feel free to email me directly. Thank you again!
