<div>Thank you for taking a look at my campaign! I’m Tiara Darnell, Owner and Executive Chef of Blaxicocina, Mexico City, Mexico’s first and only Black Soul Food restaurant. After nearly a year of pop-ups hosted out of my home, I opened BLX in February, Black History Month, 2023. My “<strong>BLA</strong>ck me<strong>XI</strong>can <strong>COCINA</strong>” or BLX is rooted in African American culinary traditions with ingredients and touches of flavor that reflect the abundance and rich culinary heritage of México, a country and people that have historically welcomed Black Americans with open arms across generations.

<div>Despite being a newcomer to CDMX and a first-time restaurateur, I’ve successfully operated and grown Blaxicocina into an internationally and locally-known destination restaurant for Mexican locals, international visitors, and expats and immigrants from across the Black diaspora and beyond. <div><em>¡Gracias por echar un vistazo a mi campaña! Soy Tiara Darnell, propietaria y chef ejecutiva de Blaxicocina, Ciudad de México, el primer y único restaurante Black Soul Food de México. Después de casi un año de eventos organizados en mi casa, abrí BLX en febrero, Mes de la Historia Negra, de 2023. Mi "BLack meXIcan COCINA" o BLX tiene sus raíces en las tradiciones culinarias afroamericanas con ingredientes y toques de sabor que reflejan la abundancia y el rico patrimonio culinario de México, un país y personas que históricamente han dado la bienvenida a los estadounidenses negros con los brazos abiertos a través de las generaciones</em>

<div><em>A pesar de ser nueva en la CDMX y de que es mi primer restaurante, he operado y convertido con éxito a Blaxicocina en un restaurante de destino reconocido internacional y localmente por los locales, visitantes extranjeros, expatriados e inmigrantes de toda la diáspora negra y más allá. Estoy buscando almas generosas para apoyar este primer y único espacio comunitario único en su tipo a medida que entra en su segundo año de funcionamiento, actualmente completamente autofinanciado por mí.</em>

<div>Over the year and three months that Blaxicocina has been open, it has been my goal for the restaurant to take part in and not just take from the local community. To that end, I've been very intentional about our social impact in a rapidly gentrifying city; we’ve worked directly with local vendors, and farmers such as Los Cedros Orgánicos, for example, to grow heritage varieties of collard greens and scotch bonnet peppers—both rarities in México—which provides both economic opportunity and familiar and novel options for our U.S. and Mexican customers. We leveraged our relationship with Sofia Rodriguez from Immigration Pros MX to provide a working and professional development opportunity and path to residency for one member of the Haitian diaspora, an effort I would eventually like to establish a non-profit and trust to continue for others in this new immigrant community.

<div><em>A lo largo del año y los tres meses que Blaxicocina ha estado abierto, mi objetivo ha sido que el restaurante participara no sólo de la comunidad local sino más global. Con ese fin, he sido muy cuidadosa sobre nuestro impacto social en una ciudad que se está aburguesando rápidamente; hemos trabajado directamente con vendedores locales y agricultores como Los Cedros Orgánicos, por ejemplo, para cultivar variedades patrimoniales de collard greens y pimientos escocés, ambas rarezas en México, lo que ofrece una oportunidad económica y opciones familiares y novedosas para nuestros clientes estadounidenses y mexicanos. Aprovechamos nuestra relación con Sofía Rodríguez de Immigration Pros MX para proporcionar una oportunidad de trabajo y desarrollo profesional y un camino hacia la residencia para un miembro de la diáspora haitiana, un esfuerzo que eventualmente me gustaría establecer una organización sin fines de lucro y para continuar en esta nueva comunidad de inmigrantes.</em>

<div>Speaking of our audience, y'all have showed up and showed out! We've welcomed hella customers, from families and community groups like MIPAD (the Most Influential People of African Descent), to cuties on their first date and homies getting together to drink and trash talk over Spades and Uno. There's even been a few celebrities in the mix with visits from reggae star, Buju Banton, "It Gets Greater Later" business queen, Bevy Smith, and Director/Creator, Boots Riley who screened his Amazon series, <em>I'm A Virgo</em>, and answered every single question from a packed-house audience. Overall, we’ve hosted nearly 50 events including the Juneteenth block party (below video recap), Pintar Y Mezcal, a paint and sip afternoon, cumbia, salsa and karaoke nights, comedy shows, poetry and open mic sessions, and live music and fire sets from musicians and DJs from México and around the world. We’ve easily served nearly 500 plates of chicken and waffles alone–and I know this because I cooked most of them!

<div><em>Hablando de nuestra audiencia, ¡todos ustedes han aparecido en el lugar y se han mostrado! Hemos dado la bienvenida a muchísimos clientes, desde familias y grupos comunitarios como MIPAD (las personas más influyentes de ascendencia africana), hasta bellezas en su primera cita y amigos que se reúnen para beber y pelear amistosamente gracias a un juego de naipes o de Uno. Incluso ha habido algunas celebridades en la mezcla con visitas como a estrella del reggae, Buju Banton, la reina de los negocios de "It Gets Greater Later", Bevy Smith y el director/creador, Boots Riley, que proyectó su serie de Amazon, I'm A Virgo, y respondió a cada pregunta de una audiencia abarrotada. <div><strong>I JUMPED INTO THE DEEP END</strong>

<div><strong>The challenge right now is exhaustion and cash flow.</strong> Launching Blaxicocina has been the toughest job I’ve ever loved: I faced several challenges particularly at the top of this year that tested my resilience, determination and mental and emotional fortitude. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn’t have started this journey relying on the finite amount of liquid savings and retirement I cobbled together in the first part of my career. Because of barriers to traditional funding and lending for women, particularly women from underrepresented communities, plus the fact that I was starting my business outside of the U.S. there really was no other avenue besides self-funding this dream to get it started.

<div>Despite these challenges and learning curves, Blaxicocina still managed to turn a small profit in February, our one year anniversary. This is huge considering it takes on average two years for a new restaurant to turn a profit. But Blaxicocina ain’t average! That’s why I’m reaching out to folks like you to give and support and keep us moving onward and upward.

<div><strong><em>SALTO AL EXTREMO PROFUNDO</em></strong>

<div><em>El desafío en este momento es el cansancio y el flujo de caja. El lanzamiento de Blaxicocina ha sido el trabajo más difícil que he amado: me enfrenté a varios desafíos, particularmente a principios de este año, que pusieron a prueba mi resistencia, determinación y fortaleza mental y emocional. Si hubiera sabido entonces lo que sé ahora, no habría comenzado este viaje confiando en la cantidad finita de ahorros y jubilación que preparé en la primera parte de mi carrera. Debido a las barreras a la financiación y los préstamos tradicionales para las mujeres, en particular las mujeres de comunidades subrepresentadas, además del hecho de que estaba comenzando mi negocio fuera de los EE. UU., realmente no había otra vía que autofinanciar este sueño para comenzar.</em>

<div><em>A pesar de estos desafíos y curvas de aprendizaje, Blaxicocina logró obtener pequeñas ganancias en febrero, nuestro primer aniversario. Esto es enorme teniendo en cuenta que un nuevo restaurante tarda un promedio de dos años en obtener ganancias. ¡Pero Blaxicocina no es normal! Es por eso que me estoy poniendo en contacto con gente como tú para que colaboren y nos apoyen y nos mantengan avanzando y hacia arriba.</em>

<div><strong>WHY WE’RE RAISING FUNDS</strong>

<div>Blaxicocina is unique, historic and worthy of community investment. We need to raise an initial round of $35,000 USD or $600,000 MXN pesos to cover the cost of keeping Blaxicocina open and operating in terms of general rent, overhead and professional development costs for my team of predominantly Mexicanos that has given me their all in the kitchen and on the floor, essential funding for necessary accounting services to keep us on the good foot financially. Additional funds over the goal would be shared between equipment costs that would allow us to finally take advantage of small and corporate catering opportunities and build an additional stream of revenue to boost the business, and our emergency fund.

<div><em>Blaxicocina es única, histórica y digna de inversión comunitaria. Necesitamos recaudar una ronda inicial de 35 000 USD o 600.000 MXN pesos para cubrir el costo de mantener a Blaxicocina abierta y operar en términos de alquiler, gastos generales y costos de desarrollo profesional para mi equipo predominantemente conformado por mexicanos que me lo ha dado todo en la cocina y en el piso, fondos esenciales para los servicios de contabilidad necesarios para mantenernos en buen pie financieramente. Los fondos adicionales por encima del objetivo se compartirían entre los costos del equipo que nos permitirían finalmente aprovechar las oportunidades de catering pequeños y corporativos y construir un flujo adicional de ingresos para impulsar el negocio, y nuestro fondo de emergencia.</em>
