Lochlan's story.
Our Little Lochlan had a hard time breathing on his own upon birth. The doctors believe that he may have been starved for oxygen right before delivery. Immediately after delivery respiratory therapy stormed in and helped get our boy breathing. Once he was breathing on his own he seemed fine, he looked healthy and happy. He was breast feeding and acting like a normal newborn. Then we notice a twitch on the right of side of body just a few hours after being in recovery. Lochlan was quickly taken down and evaluated. It turned out those twitches were seizures. We were devistated. After 20 plus minutes of seizure activity with no interventions helping, they quickly transferred him to a level 3 NICU that could provide the care he was needing. Once they got the seizures under control it was time to start looking for the cause. MRI results show significant brain damage. While we are still awaiting some test results, they are fairly certain he has a condition known as HIE, or hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. This diagnosis accounts for the possible lack of oxygen right before/during delivery and the assistance he needed to breath after birth. Lochlan has been in NICU for 6 days now, but he's progressing so much everyday. He may even get to come soon. We are looking at a future of many neurological appointments, medications, physical therapy, and potentially speech and occupational therapy. But only time will tell how much early intervention he will need. While we are so optimistic about his future, the medical bills are going to pile up quickly.
