With a Little Help from our Friends

Dear friends, family, strangers who just bumped into this by chance.
As different degrees of COVID lockdown are still progressing and ever-changing throughout Europe, many jobs are on the line now more than ever. We have all seen people close to us struggle with making ends meet. It is also during this time that we have seen people step up for each other and make sure nobody is left behind, which is why this Gofundme campaign is hugely important to us.
Why this fundraiser?
Hospitality has been among the sectors that have been hit the hardest. Our close friend, John (name changed to respect his privacy), is one of the amazing humans who dedicate themselves to cooking all the delicious food you order at the restaurants, which has been a passion of his for over ten years. We have shared many post-work cigarettes, gaming sessions and nerd conventions, ranting over the amount of pressure he was put under, difficult customers and draconian bosses, and despite that, his spirit and hard work have always kept him going. He has never given up on doing what he loves. He has prepared fantastic food feasts for his friends just to make people happy, as if the crushing hours of overtime were not enough. He has sacrificed a lot of time, energy and resources to be sure he could keep working as a chef and support himself and his girlfriend.
But being good and passionate about what you do is proving not to be enough to keep afloat in this time. Lately, things have gotten worse: jobs have been lasting days and weeks at most, instead of months and years. The continuous changes in restaurant opening rules mean that his colleagues and him are being repeatedly let go overnight, with nothing else to do but scramble to find the next job to make ends meet. Additionally, having relocated several times to pursue job offers, which were then dropped by his employers as soon as hospitality kept opening and closing, he is far from all friends and family who can be there for him.
His situation at the moment is extremely precarious, there are no job openings and without a contract he cannot afford stable housing and basic daily expenses. We are doing this because this is what friends do, and there is no way we won’t do everything we can to help him out. Most of us had to go back home to be close to our families during the pandemic, meaning we can’t be there in person to support him, and sadly, this includes his own girlfriend. We want to show him that he is not alone in this. Nobody should be.
What can you do?
And this is where we, his friends, are asking for the smallest something you can spare, even if that means 1 euro or just sharing this around your social media and contacts. Many of us are also in between jobs, so we really understand and appreciate the value of even doing something small. We hope that by reaching out to our contacts we can make it work, somehow. We are going to try, with a little help from our friends.
Our goal is to get him through December with a roof over his head, food in his belly and the peace of mind to find out what to do next. Christmas away from your loved ones is hard enough, and to send him some love and support we will attempt to raise 500EU or more. To make this our Christmas gift to him, we will end the campaign on Boxing day 2020 (Saturday 26th December).
