FBM for Antone

Our coworker, friend & brother, Antone Mendes, was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident on Sunday, April 21, 2019.  Before we proceed with the need for assistance, please let us explain why we have volunteered to start this campaign for him with a story of JUST ONE of his co-workers, Richard.

"I have worked with many people over the 30 years of my career, many of whom were quickly forgotten when I moved to a new company.  Antone is very different.  I knew from the moment I met him that he was an extremely special individual.  Antone was brought in for an interview at Foundation Building Materials (FBM).  While waiting for me to arrive for the interview, he was chatting with a few people that he knew at work and then all of the sudden Antone started laughing.  The deep hearty laugh made the whole room break out in laughter including me and I didn't even know why I was laughing.  Over the months, Antone has proven himself to be a hard worker, a friend to everyone and a valued member of our team.

I've also had occasions to be around Antone away from work and while he was with his daughter, Naomi - 5 years old. It was immediately apparent to me that Antone was not just a great lovable guy at work, but also a loving & caring father who would do anything for his little girl and his son, Zaylen - 1.5 years old."

Fast forward to the evening of April 21st.  Antone had just spent time with his children and decided to enjoy a nice night out riding his bike with friends.  They decided to ride out to Lake of Las Vegas.  On the way back to town, Antone wanted to show his friends a different route back into town.  While riding out ahead of his friends, we assume he made contact with the curb in a bend in the road and was ejected from his bike.  Antone was flung over 40 feet to where he landed.

The paramedics found Antone in critical condition.  He was transported to the hospital where they found internal bleeding that required two separate surgeries.  His pelvis was fractured in several places requiring an almost 9 hour surgery, which is still not fully repaired and may require additional surgeries.  He also sustained 2 compound fractures on his right arm and a shattered right elbow that required an additional 6 hour surgery.  Antone had a severely lacerated finger that has been addressed.  Antone's right hand will require an extensive surgery that is scheduled for next week.  His physical injuries are also complicated by the fact that there is the strong possibility of nerve damage in his hand and arm.  Antone, the guy described as having an incredibly contagious laugh and golden heart, was broken.

Although we are grateful beyond words that Antone was not taken from us, the possibilty of full recovery is not promising at this time.  Antone has already been through what the attending surgeon described as, "one of the most difficult surgeries I have ever performed" as his pelvis and arm were similarly difficult surgeries.  Antone is not out of the woods yet, though he has normal range blood pressure, he will continue the respirator until doctors determine if he is able to breathe on his own.  It is still unknown how effective the surgeries have been until Antone regains consciousness.

Regardless of the outcome of the surgeries, one thing remains certain, Antone will have a very difficult road ahead of him with many months, if not years, of physical rehab.  He is loved beyond words by his family, friends, coworkers.  In actuality, anyone who has been fortunate enough to know him, loves him.

Antone is a young man, 29 yrs old, and a hard - blood, sweat and tears - worker.  As most of us know and possibly experienced ourselves,  insurance does not cover all of the costs of hospital and medical expenses required with extensive recovery and rehabilitative needs.

If you are looking for a cause or purpose to make a contribution to something of value, we, Antone's FBM family, are asking that you please consider his cause.  We are seeking to raise $50,000 as a very rough estimate of uncovered hospital and medical expenses.  Any remaining funds after hospital and medical expenses are paid will go towards his daily living costs and assist with his bills.

We all thank you from our hearts for reading about Antone and for your consideration!
