Cows for Cambodia

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Lea-anne, and I want to raise $2,000 to help buy cows for poor families living in rural Cambodia.

Cambodia is one of the poorest nations in the world, with a high percentage of families living in rural areas.  To own a cow in these areas is a massive advantage in life, but most of them can’t afford to buy one which costs around $900 AUD.  (an average farm income for a year is $800)  Cows for Cambodia was set up by South Australian media personality Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello and is essentially a ‘cow bank’.   The charity buys the cows, then they loan the families a pregnant cow and they have to look after it, and then they get to keep the calf when it is born.  The cow then comes back to the charity & the cycle begins again. (95% of the cows are given to women to help empower them and their families).  It’s about providing an opportunity to break the poverty cycle, rather than giving a direct handout.  There are strict rules and each family has to sign a contract, basically saying that they will look after the cow properly.  Cosi previously attended Roseworthy Agricultural College in South Australia, and so has a strong background in animal husbandry.  Every cow is inspected, drenched & vaccinated on these trips, which ensures the cows are well cared for and are healthy, happy cows.

That’s where the volunteers like me come in.  Each year Cosi takes over 2 or 3 groups of volunteers to help the communities with building projects, helping with the cows, goats and ducks, and any other similar project that is needed at the time.  We also help out at schools and participate in a rice run, where tonnes of bagged rice is delivered to needy families.

Cows for Cambodia is a registered Not-For-Profit Australian charity, where all donations over $2 are tax deductibleAll the Volunteers (including Cosi) pay for their own flights, accommodation and expenses, so that almost every cent goes directly to the charity.  There isn’t an office, no full time staff, or expensive marketing campaigns, so very little comes out of the fund to cover running costs.  Also none of the three directors of the charity get a cent from the charity.  This is how the money gets to where it is needed.

I am going in November 2019, and need to raise $2,000 which goes directly to the charity to help buy cows.  Any donation large or small, will be gratefully accepted.
