<div>America’s 2.5 million farmworkers know and live the ins and outs of the food system, from how to produce food to harvesting food. They work in the fields, packing sheds, tree nurseries, dairies, and animal farming.

<div>Despite having an essential role in our economy, many farmworkers suffer from exploitative working conditions, low wages, migration trauma, poor housing conditions, and rural isolation. Most workers lack health insurance, and few can pay for expensive medical bills.

<div><strong>The barriers to accessing healthcare:</strong>
</div>
<div>When Farmworkers get sick, barriers such as no paid leave, lack of health insurance, or transportation prevent them from seeing a professional health care provider for routine screenings and wellness checks. Many farmworkers resort to quick remedies, such as painkillers, to alleviate their pain and continue to work when they feel sick or are in pain. Ultimately, they seek medical attention when the pain becomes too much to handle or they feel like the health condition has worsened.

<div>Another contributing factor to poor health among farmworkers is the repetitive work they perform for over 12 hours a day. Bending, stooping, carrying heavy buckets, working under the sun, etc., can cause extensive damage to the body.

<div>Farmworkers need help paying for diagnostic tests, medical treatments, surgeries, and medications.

<div>The Call for Health (CFH) program helps farmworkers navigate the healthcare system to overcome barriers. It has a documented history of providing financial assistance to increase access to essential health services.<strong> From 2000 to 2016, CFH provided over $329,000 in financial assistance to 2,108 farmworkers and leveraged over $546,000 through kind donations from care providers</strong>. This money made it possible for farmworkers to receive critically needed healthcare, including surgeries, diagnostic tests, medications, vision treatments, dental care, and cancer treatments. Sadly, CFH could not continue to assist farmworkers due to a lack of funds.

With $400, you can help a farmworker pay for part of a dental treatment, support a cancer treatment, or copay for surgery.

<div>For example, in February 2023, CFH helped Marcos*, a farmworker in Philadelphia who had a vision procedure and now needed a follow-up but did not have the funds to pay for it. CFH helped him with $250 towards the follow-up visit. The worker was grateful to receive this assistance.
