Farmer Needs A Win

We want to tell you a story.
It’s a story that beats with the heart of Australia, and although you might not have realised, I promise that it affects you in some way.
Imagine for a moment that you run a family business. Maybe you don’t have to imagine and you can relate directly, there are thousands of small business owners and hundreds of thousands of people who work directly for this same family business.

Now imagine this business only gets paid for the work they do once or twice, or maybe three times in a year. No fortnightly paycheck, no monthly cash turn over. There’s money in May, then you have to make that last until the start of November.
Now imagine, you’ve done nothing wrong in your business, you’ve been at work everyday, you work most weekends, you have made the best decisions you could about the future, BUT one of your paychecks doesn’t come in. The carpenter hasn’t been able to get any timber, your coffee shop hasn’t been able to grind any more beans, your family run accounting firm doesn’t do a single tax return, for SIX MONTHS. So you live of your savings, and your family does without, and you sell what you can, all to try and stay afloat for the next paycheck. And then that doesn’t come.

This is the reality for many of Australia’s farmers. Right now. We know you have heard about the drought, you the Australian people brought tears to our eyes and hope to our hearts at the end of 2018 when the donations flooded in, and the trucks packed with hay for our stock, and food for our work dogs rolled into towns that had not had a reason to celebrate in a long long time.
This same drought that you heard about almost a year ago is still ongoing, day by day the grass has continued to die and the waterholes have dried. It is now bleaker than ever. The family this is written for is one living 30km south of a town called Moree. The Hamilton family have owned this farm for over one hundred years, and like many family businesses, fathers taught their sons, and mothers taught their daughter about how to live and work on land that has often been so good to all of us living in the towns and cities. These are not huge businesses with international investors and deep pockets, all of the funds for this business are made and earned on the land where it sits. So are their neighbours, so are thousands of families across Australia.
The farm is now barren, there is no one alive that can remember it ever being this dry. When its dry there are no crops to harvest, no sheep to shear, no cattle to go to market. No money coming in. But literally thousands of animals that still need to eat every day, animals who this winter will have babies that require feeding.
That’s where you can help. If you eat food like bread or milk, if you wear clothes, if you enjoy a steak now and then, an australian farmer has been involved in your life. What we are asking is not that you fund their lives, or donate your hard earned money so they can buy things for themselves. We are asking that you please donate, so that we can buy hay and other feed for animals that have no grass, or so that we can buy food for their work dogs who have stuck by the farmers side day in and day out. This particular request is for hay for a family owned farm, run by Rob and Joanne Hamilton. You don’t have to donate to them specifically here, but you should donate to someone, because every family needs a farmer, and those farmer are doing it tough – they struggle to ask for help themselves, so we are asking for them. Please, can you help?
