Drought-Fire-Flood Farm Animal Rescue & Support

Donation protected
UPDATE:

We finally have proper RAIN!!!! So the number of loads of water we need to cart in to the animals has significantly decreased. Although we do desperately need to purchase a LOT of piping to start moving water around the property to the different herds of rescue horses and cows. We also need to buy a second water tank so that we can start storing all this glorious water for the dry months (installed, the water tank will cost around $4,500).

One of the big problems created by the drought was damage done to one of our dams. Due to it completely drying up, it seems to have developed some deep cracks that means this source of water storage is no longer available to the animals. It fills right up with decent heavy rain, only to be absorbed into the parched earth within a few days...once again leaving only a puddle. So... it looks like we're in for some very expensive works to repair the dam and reline it so it holds water.

And apart from buying feed, medication, parasite treatments etc etc, our other main focus now is FENCING! The number of permanent resident rescues at the Sanctuary has considerably increased with many of the fire evacuees needing a new home.... so they now have a forever home here at the Owl and the PussyCat . Proper fencing is not cheap, but our priority is to keep the animals safe and secure, so sturdy fencing is a must.

ORIGINAL CAMPAIGN:

Here in New South Wales, Australia we are enduring unprecedented bushfires due to our ongoing drought. They are even ravaging rainforest areas never before threatened.

Our region has been battling a bushfire that has now engulfed well over 6000 hectares meaning the 'fire zone' on extreme fire danger days has affected huge numbers of lives.

Our rescue sanctuary has been safely out of the fire zone so we have been able to open our doors to accept and evacuate animals from the dangerous areas. It's been a crazy, tiring month!

And sadly, with temperatures consistently soaring, high winds and no significant rain forecast, it looks like we’re in for a hot and very dangerous spring/summer.

We are working tirelessly to provide a safe haven for the gorgeous beings that have been evacuated from these areas, and we’re organised to evacuate more as needed.

Due to the drought, we are having to cart in water as our dams are very low and are not healthy enough for the animals to drink from. Buy feed as the grass is crispy (and feed costs have soared due to the drought).  The distances that we have been driving to get these darlings to safety are considerable. Meanwhile, our paid work was largely put on hold at the peak of the fires.

If you would like to support the evacuation effort and ongoing care of the animals, we’d be forever grateful!! Even a small donation makes a huge difference. Here’s an idea of some of our costs:

- a bail of hay is between … $22 - $38 (we’re currently going through around 5 bails per day)

- 250 Litre water trough … $180

- 500 litre water trough … $254

- load of water … $260 - $400 (we’re going through well over a 1000 litres per day)

- water pump … approx $350

- bag of chicken/duck feed … $32

- bag of calf pellets … $20

- bag of horse feed … $36

- horse supplements … $50

- insect control treatment system for cows and horses … approx. $500

- permanent and temporary fencing … LOTS!

- fuel for cars and the tractor… we've lost count!!

Any surplus funds raised will go directly towards the ongoing support of our permanent resident rescues (ie. feed, water, supplements, tick and worming treatments, vet bills, farrier costs etc etc), and the costs associated with facilitating the rehoming of surrendered animals.

We’re a family-run, volunteer-supported sanctuary so all money raised goes directly to the animals as we have no wages to pay.

If you're not in a position to provide financial support then you can still help! Please share, share, share this campaign and like and follow us on Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/OwlandPusCatFarm/  and on IG: @owlandpuscat

And if you are in our region, please feel free to come for a visit. There’s some pretty gorgeous beings galloping and waddling around!! There’s even the opportunity to stay at our sanctuary in our beautiful FarmHaus or to use the sanctuary as a shoot/event location (100% of the money raised less consumables/laundry costs goes directly to supporting the animals).

Love and gratitude from all beings at
