Heartworm is a terrible but easily preventable disease, and is widespread in the South. Heartworm is very easy to prevent. A simple dose of one $10 tablet per month will prevent a dog from contracting this highly contagious disease, transmittable by a single mosquito bite. Once a dog has been infected, the adult worms eventually take root in the heart and pulmonary arteries, which can lead to a painful death by congestive heart failure. Sound horrific? It is. Treatment is both expensive and painful. FAPS spends thousands of dollars on heartworm positive dogs every year for medications, tests, and vet visits.
A large number of the animals that come to FAPS are heartworm positive. Although it is inexpensive to prevent them, treating heartworms is quite costly, and FAPS is low on the funds used to treat our heartworm positive animals. The treatment can cost up to $1,000 to treat heartworms at a private vet, and we know that the obligation to pay for treatment can understandably be a deterrent to adopting a heartworm positive animal when there are others they can adopt who won’t need such treatment.
Through our fund for heartworm treatment we are able to cover the cost of treatment and heartworm preventative so that heartworms are not a deterrent to adoption. Funded by your donations, the fund ensures that the cost of adopting a heartworm positive dog is no more than that of a heartworm negative dog, removing a significant barrier to adoption for hundreds of dogs since the fund's inception.
Our $5,000 goal will cover the cost of heartworm treatment for the 18 dogs in our system with heartworms and heartworm preventative.
