Fanny Cohen was the ultimate Jewish mother — loving, nurturing, energized and energizing, happy, and fully dedicated to her family and her community. She instilled in us a love for being Jewish and for doing mitzvot with joy from an early age that we carry with us today.
One of her favorite mitzvot was Shabbat. Every week, no matter where we were, my mother would light Shabbat candles. Just as the Shabbat candles lit up our home, our mother illuminated our lives with her energy and love.
In 2014, when Fanny was diagnosed with Scleroderma, her life quickly changed and she found herself in the hospital constantly. In 2017, during her last year of life, she spent nearly half the year in the hospital. Even though she could hardly move, she wouldn't miss a Shabbat candle lighting. She'd ask us to set up a Shabbat table for her in the hospital so she could complete the mitzvah.
During one of her last months in the hospital, she mentioned to me and my friend Ceceil that she wished the hospital provided patients with nicer Shabbat boxes. She felt the mitzvah was not being elevated to the beautiful level it needed to be. She named the project Shabbox, appointed herself as CEO and asked us to please start researching.
Although she could unfortunately not complete the project before she passed away, we want to be able to complete it for her before her Yartzeit which is coming up on December 11th.
Our mission is to create small, elegant Shabbat boxes filled with everything a patient would need to create their own mini-shabbat table in the hospital — candles, challah, grape juice, a challah cover and other goodies. We will personally be delivering these boxes to hospitals in NYC every Thursday night. Each Shabbox will cost us about $10 to put together and we are trying to make 2K boxes. We are looking to raise money for the supplies for the initial run.
Just as my mom's light illuminated those around her we hope these Shabbox's can illuminate these patients' lives during a difficult period that is in need of light. Please help us reach our goal and share this light!
