It’s been nearly 18 months since Vince got the diagnosis that changed his life. Forever. The 45 year old, dual occupation,
police officer and elevator technician, hockey and baseball coach, married father of three young kids heard the words...
Congestive Heart Failure. But there would be more.
After several months of evaluations, testing and trial treatments,he was further diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. What is that? It is a rare, inflammatory disease that creates abnormal masses or nodules of inflamed tissues in multiple organs of the body, altering the normal function of the affected organs.
One more blow….There is no cure for Sarcoidosis.
Patients can experience periods of remission, only after successful management of the disease with weekly chemotherapy and daily steroids. As time passed, Vince’s treating physicians confirmed that the Sarcoidosis spread to his lungs, lymph nodes, and heart. In August of 2017 Vince underwent surgery to have an ICD placed in his chest. Due to his fragile immune system, weak heart, and damaged lungs, Vince is unable to return to active duty as a police
officer or any meaningful full or part-time employment. He has not worked since December of 2016. Despite several treating physicians’ medical opinion that Vince is disabled, the State of Illinois has denied his disability petition on two occasions. He will re-apply for benefits after his physicians complete another round of tests on him, but he has been advised by his attorneys to expect that it will be a full year before he can secure a hearing date before the disability board.
So now what? The emotional impact has been tough on Vince, Rhonda and the boys. They have changed their life style to adapt to the new reality. The financial impact has been crippling. With Rhonda’s 2nd grade teacher’s salary, she has been able to put food on the table and pay the monthly bills, but any savings are depleted while the month-to-month bills are constant. It goes without saying that this is a tough time for the Esposito Family.
The Espositos are a strong family blessed by the support and love of their family and many friends. Vince and Rhonda have touched the lives of countless people in positive ways. Their presence in the community and among friends is evident.
