Families Affected by Border Crisis

Tax deductible
We are raising funds to support the Indigenous Interpreting Program, led by the Binational Front of Indigenous Organizations (aka FIOB, Frente Indígena de Organizaciones Binacionales). The program provides translation services for families of indigenous heritage that have been affected by the crisis at the U.S./Mexico border.  These families, who speak neither English nor Spanish as a first language, are particularly vulnerable to the tactics of family separation and deception used by U.S. immigration officials.

FIOB has been doing cutting-edge work by advocating that language rights for speakers of indigenous languages are a human right. They have been working closely with expert interpreters to identify best practices for translating the complex verbiage of the U.S. legal, medical, and social support systems into indigenous languages from across Latin America.

In the years that they have been in operation, FIOB has been able to correct numerous legal, medical, and social wrongdoings against indigenous peoples. FIOB has dealt with unbelievably unjust cases simply because people didn’t realize the person was of indigenous origin and didn’t speak Spanish or English.

In the context of the current Border Crisis, their work seems even more urgent. So, our goal is to raise $2500 between now and September 30, 2018. We are processing the donations through Red Mexicana de Líderes y Organizaciones Migrantes, who are serving as the fiscal sponsor for the fundraiser.

We are going to contribute to FIOB's Indigenous Interpreting Program so they can continue to help represent indigenous families during these extremely challenging times.

Beneficiary: The mission of Binational Front of Indigenous Organizations (aka FIOB, Frente Indígena de Organizaciones Binacionales) is to contribute to the development and self-determination of the migrant and non-migrant indigenous communities as well as struggle for the defense of human rights with justice and gender equity at the binational level.

Fiscal Sponsor: The mission of Red Mexicana de Líderes y Organizaciones Migrantes is to foster a world where the rights of the Mexican immigrant community are respected and to proactively promote binational participation in the areas politics, economics, social justice, education, and cultural affairs.
