On the morning of June 25th, 1997 Viola, Victor and Sammantha Cano anxiously welcomed a beautiful baby girl into our world! It was on this same morning the family learned their new baby girl was diagnosed with Dandy- Walker malformation with hydrocephalus. Keeping positive, and focusing on God, the family named their precious little girl Faith!
The Dandy-Walker Malformation is a term which represents several abnormalities of brain development which exist simultaneously. Although earlier, traditional descriptions of this complex include the incomplete formation of several fourth ventricular outlet pathways for the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), it is now known that this occurs in only a minority of affected individuals. The above noted developmental abnormalities generally result in the formation of posterior fossa cyst(s) which communicate(s) with an enlarged fourth ventricle. The mean incidence of this complex in individuals with hydrocephalus is estimated to be 3%.. which includes our precious Faith Cano! Dandy-Walker patients with successfully shunted hydrocephalus can do very well and are frequently in the mainstream at school... Which also includes our incredible Faith Cano!
Since the day she was born, Faith's loving parents refused to let such diagnosis keep them from leading a normal life. Victor & Viola were warned they both carry the gene and chances of this happening again with more children conceived were high. But by the grace of God, the Canos soon welcomed very healthy Tory and Mikiela into our world to complete the Cano 6. The Canos believe and continue to keep faith in God and preserve together, as a family through a journey unparalleled to the norm.
Despite all the odds given, Faith Louise Cano not only walked when Doctors said otherwise... She roller skated with a walker & walked down the aisle as a charming flower girl in a family wedding at age 3. She rode horses and impressed the congregation with her pretty little voice in church choir. Faith not only mastered the art of dance together with her mom and sisters.. she topped cheer-leading pyramids and performed on stage in multiple productions. She has a sensitive, caring, loving boyfriend and is always among the top of her class. Faith's smile lights up a room and she's always giving and receiving LOVE!
Faith is among 40% of Dandy Walker individuals who have received a single compartment shunt that subsequently compartmentalized another CSF space requiring a second shunt. Faith was recently rushed from Clovis, NM to a hospital in Lubbock, TX where she immediately underwent 3 brain surgeries within 34 hours and has yet to fully awake and recover. A total of 9 surgeries in less then 2 months and plenty of intense rehab still to come. Faith's spirit is fully alive and her miraculous strength continues to shine daily.
Faith recently celebrated her 16th birthday in Dallas while completing 6 weeks of intense therapy and rehab. In her 16 years of living, she has danced into the lives of many, touching hearts individually. Faith was hospitalized for 84 days and is aware but not fully awake. She is aware of her amazing family right by her side and will soon be headed home to begin yet another chapter of her journey in a whole new world... an ADA complaint world. Dandy-Walker Malformations have variable features and, therefore, no single treatment option is universally appropriate. Individualized, aggressive treatment with careful long-term surveillance on Faith will lead to an excellent outcome.
