Seven young students from Northside School in Fairport began a true "odyssey" when they formed an Odyssey of the Mind team last Fall. They worked very hard for several months to develop a creative solution to a challenging problem --- the crux of the international Odyssey of the Mind program. They were successful and finished in first place in the highly competitive regional tournament to advance to the state level.
These ambitious 4th and 5th graders set their sights on making it to World Finals. Their hard work, determination and creativity paid off and they finished in 2nd place and received the coveted invitation to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.
Now, their challenge is to get to Iowa State University where this prestigious tournament will be held on May 28-31. But they can't get there without YOUR help. Odyssey of the Mind challenges kids to develop creativity and problem-solving skills. Coaches and parents are strictly forbidden from offering ideas or assistance as the kids tackle the challenges. The Northside School team had to create and perform a skit that centered on the creation of a stackable structure made of balsa wood and incorporates an "artistic representation of Earth." During the timed performance, they assemble the balsa wood structure and then test its design by stacking weights on it until it fails. At the Rochester regional tournament, their 18-gram structure held 200 pounds to advance them to the state level competition, where their new structure held 215 pounds.
Fairport Odyssey of the Mind is sponsored by the PTA and supported by volunteer coaches and coordinators. Unfortunately, this unexpected opportunity to participate at an international level comes with costs that far exceed what the PTA had allocated for the program. The team wants to earn the money to go, but they have only a few weeks. Will you help?
