<div>It’s definitely been a hard few years to say the least. Every step I make forward, get knocked back a few. I know I’m far from alone in that. But for myself it’s been the struggles of bankruptcy and a layoff from my marketing gig in ’23. The latter only to find I was dropped into a horrible job market.

<div>But steps forward where you can make them. Grabbing jobs in and out of my field where I could find them.

<div>As for those steps forward? Recently discharged from bankruptcy, which was an amazing relief. But only quickly to discover some kind of glitch in my plan from one of the Claimants. Essentially, one Claimant wrote in a 12% interest on their claim, but for whatever reason the Trustee didn’t pay the interest, only the principal.

<div>So, coming out of bankruptcy there’s been a $6K+ debt. That Claimant was my HOA...

<div>(<strong>NOTE 7/16/26: </strong>Unrelated to this, I recently had the opportunity to speak with a lawyer in the bankruptcy field. One point in the conversation, he asked if I had any questions. I mentioned the interest situation and why wouldn't the Trustee have paid that. He spoke to if the interest was estimated and added to the claim, it would have been paid. If it's something that accrues, it typically isn't. He went on to say that some companies do this to come after people they're discharged. He described this as a "shady" practice, but legal. And my experience with my experience with the Property Manager, not to be confused with my HOA, that tracked.)

<div>...and with the knocks keep coming, because the Board passed a Special Assessment at the start of the year in which all residents of my building are being charged, well, another $6K+ for building maintenance.

<div>In this case, one of two elevators died. I live in an old building, and the parts just aren’t made anymore. The Board tried, to no avail.

<div>I find myself looking at $13K at the least… I don’t know how I am going to handle that. On one hand, that interest, one would have had hoped all fees would’ve been handled in bankruptcy, only to come out with debt has been disheartening to say the least.

<div>I did try and explore funding like Personal Loans or a HELOC. But quickly found out recently being discharged from bankruptcy, I can’t get approval. Like for my bank, it has to be 4 years from date of discharge to be considered for any type of financing.
</div>

<div>So, I am hoping to ask for help.
</div>

<div>Where I find myself lost is with this bankruptcy interest and Special Assessment. The latter being my focus here.
</div>

<div>The Property Management company for the HOA has been known to be quick to Force Foreclosure. And I’m a little freaked out what might happen if I am unable to cover this Special Assessment.
</div>
