This pandemic has touched everyone’s life’s in some size, shape or form. The reality of COVID19 is someone we love or know will become severely ill or die.
The health care workers in your community are going to work tirelessly to prevent that from happening. However, the health care workers themselves are at great risk at becoming severely ill.
Many are aware of the Personal Protective Equipment or PPE shortage that is sweeping across the United States. Sadly, this shortage is so far beyond a hospital or health care system. It is a much larger problem that has direct consequences for the health care workers who are not getting the protection they need while serving their community.
Going into nursing, I wanted to serve, help, heal and protect the community I lived in. As I have grown older, my desires have changed to wanting to create a healthy community my children can grow up in. While I did know there was an inherent risk by choosing the nursing profession, I did not know I would be faced with such difficult times. Currently nurses are being asked to use PPE repetitively, outside the manufacturing guidelines, until it has become soiled (with blood or fluid) or becomes broken. These are mask, face shields or eye goggles that are meant to be used once than disposed of. Instead I am being asked to teach nurses how to safely remove virus infested mask and place them in paper bags to then wear again for the next patient. I am teaching nurses how to wash face shields and goggles, ensuring they know the proper dry time, in *hopes* that the virus is killed between uses. Sadly, this shortage will only progressively get worse as the magnitude of the pandemic increases.
We know you want to help and here is your opportunity. Some nerdy guys with fancy machines have teamed up with some nurses who fear bringing COVID-19 home to their loved ones or become severely ill themselves to create a face shield that will protect the eyes of nurses while prolonging the life of their beloved n95 mask.
Myself, Kayla Waldoch and Ashley O'Connell are labor and delivery nurses from Central Minnesota. We are trying to bring a faceshield to all healthcare workers who are providing care to your loved ones who have been infected with COVID19.
The program has been written and demo products have been created and tried out. The guys have agreed to donate their time and equipment, the nurses have been working tirelessly to get them into the hands of health care workers, in your community. Once created, the faceshields will be put into small hospitals, nursing homes, assisted livings, EMS and emergency services in Minnesota. The goal is to help small facilities who may not have the ability to obtain the PPE their employees need.
That is were you come in! We need help raising funds to obtain materials. EVERY SINGLE DOLLER WILL GO DIRECTLY TO SUPPLIES. Any donation would help!
The population of Minnesota is 5.5 million, and if every person donated $1, that would be a heck of a lot protection for the nurses who are trying to save you or your loved one’s life.
