Face of Addiction

Thank you for taking a minute to consider supporting The Face of Addiction. Allow me explain what this project is all about.

The opioid epidemic has reached into virtually every corner of American society at this point, yet its impact has been felt especially hard  in rural Appalachia where I live. Over the past two years I've been listening to the stories of people struggling with the specter of addiction, and the idea for a book was born out of my efforts to get closer to the crisis and to the people who have been most impacted by it.

The Face of Addiction is a platform to share the stories of people in southern Ohio who are struggling with addiction.  What I hope to highlight is not just each person's battle against substance use disorder but the people themselves, showing who they are above and beyond their struggle with addiction. By telling their stories, I hope to contribute to breaking down of the stigma that still exists in Appalachian culture which hinders people from getting the help they need.

That said, I'm currently in the process of interviewing participants whose stories will be featured in the book. I preview each person's contribution on the Face of Addiction Facebook page, which you can check out here . Each story will comprise a single chapter and be joined by a brief history of the opioid crisis in southern Ohio along with a message of hope for the future.

The Face of Addiction is an independent project that will be self-published through the support of community partners and patrons of my work. Proceeds from its sale will go to support the work of recovery in my county. In other words, it is not for profit and I will not be taking a single dime from it at any point along the way.

The initial interview process is complete and I am now getting the rough drafts into the hands of each storyteller for their edits and additions. My goal is to have the manuscript ready for publishing in March 2020. Projected publishing costs are $2,000, which will include cover design, formatting, and professional editing. I want to complete the project for as little money as possible, but I also want it to be well done. The final product will be a reflection of the people and place that I call home.

Please consider supporting The Face of Addiction with as little or as much as you can give. I'll be happy to provide an accounting for every dollar spent when it comes time to publish, as well as for any proceeds that result from its sale and distribution.

Thanks so much!
