Wesley Lucas was born March 1, 2015. This year in May at only 2 1/2, Wesley was diagnosed with acute lymphblastic leukemia (ALL). This cancer affects the white blood cells, these cells being the ones that protect the body from infection and disease. Originally Wesley was going to be able to leave the hospital after 8 days and then be moved to Ronald McDonald House and live there for a month, unfortunately his calcium levels were unstable, and he had to stay in SickKids longer.
Wesley has already started chemotherapy, and will continue this treatment for the next 2 - 3 years. He remains for the time being, at SickKids in Toronto, after being released he had to be readmitted for infected sores in his mouth.
Luckily, they now have a room at RMH and are able to move in there instead of jumping from hotel to hotel. After the initial month at RMH they will be able to come home and use Soilders as their satalite hospital for his chemo treatments. This will be 1 - 2 times a week, which means lots of travel back and forth from Stayner to Orillia.
The chemotherapy, however, is not covered by OHIP, which means John and Cassie have many expenses including of course the chemo but also parking costs, driving back and forth from Stayner to Orillia, and Toronto, food, gas, and much more.
Wesley is such a great little guy, with the greatest smile and laugh- and he gives the best hugs! It is so hard to see him uncomfortable and not his happy little self. We are broken hearted- but we know who is in control- so we're trusting the Lord will provide- God is good all the time!
