Backpacks for Kids!

Nine year old Dariana from Honduras was separated from her father and sent to the Clint Border Patrol station with 50 other children, only allowed out of her overcrowded, dirty, concrete cell for fifteen minutes a day. Her most prominent memory? The color of the guards uniforms and the guns that they carried. Dariana was a child on the US-Mexico border with no family, no hope, and no backpack. Children like Dariana are still stuck in detention centers around the border, living only off of their own resilience, strength, and determination. These children are separated from their parents and not receiving proper care, education, and social support. This lack of education and care leads to health and hygiene issues, gender inequality, and self-esteem issues. These children need their childhood back; after all that they have been through, they deserve a sense of normalcy and hope. Access to education and proper care is a basic human right. Therefore, we, at Backpacks for Kids, provide educational and hygiene materials to children from grades k-12 to promote mental and physical health. We put all of the small items of great help into backpacks not only for storage purposes but also because they represent education and self-sufficiency. At Backpacks for Kids, we remember the feelings of excitement, independence, and preparedness that our backpacks always gave us, and we want to pass that feeling along to children at the border. Children like Dariana have overcome some of the most inhumane circumstances; the least we can do is give back a backpack. Thank you!
