Rudy's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Crystal Montague. I humbly write this on behalf of my [step] father Rudolph “Rudy” Broadnax, Sr. and his wife (my mom) Vondalee Rice-Broadnax. Rudy came into my brother and I life 28 years ago and graciously and unselfishly accepted the responsibility of rearing us both in addition to raising his biological children. The care, concern, support and the life lessons he’s taught us have reared us into the men and women we are today. Rudy was a trucker by trade and have been in the business for over 50 years. After decades of working for others, he ventured into establishing his own empire and became an Owner/Operator, passionately naming his company R&V Transport, Inc. (the initials of he and his loving wife). This business has fueled many financial setbacks for he and his wife, but with his great passion for trucking and faith in God, he always persevered. It’s very rare that we are fortunate to work in a field that brings us great joy, but Rudy ate, slept and breathed trucks!

On Monday, September 22, 2014, Rudy’s life has changed forever. I received a call from my mom who was understandably shaken and scared asking if I could leave work and drive her to a hospital over 150 miles away. You see, Rudy was involved in a severe tractor/trailer accident in Lancaster, PA whereby he was run over by his tractor, crushing both of his legs. Both legs are severely damaged with his left leg sustaining most of it. He was rushed to the trauma unit in a nearby hospital where he underwent immediate and life threatening surgery. The prognosis of his injuries is a broken thigh bone, a dislocated knee and multiple fractures. He remains in ICU in Lancaster, PA where he will remain for an undetermined period of time. But he is coherent and in true Rudy fashion, trying to remain strong for his family.

We are eternally grateful to the Almighty for sparing Rudy’s life as this accident could have had an entirely different outcome.  The road to recovery for Rudy will be a long and painful one. Even more, adapting to his new life in this capacity will be heartbreaking - heartbreaking not only for him, but for also those who love him and know him best. He will require multiple surgeries, the placement of permanent metal rods in his lower extremities and extensive physical therapy before he will be able to walk independently. While he may walk again, the harsh reality is, that he will never drive again. Therefore, his business as he knows it is no more. As the sole provider for his family, this unfortunate accident is sure to bankrupt the business and also my mom and dad personally. With the mounting medical bills, physical therapy, the travel required from MD to PA, the salary of $14.50 per hour, earned by my mom will only take them so far.

I’m reaching out to the trucking community, loved ones and friends to solicit prayers and donations that will aid Rudy in his recovery and lessen the load for what life as he knows it will be. We’ve received an outcry of love and support and on behalf of my family, I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Sincerely,
Crystal
