Medical Expenses

This beautiful family has received life changing news and need our help with Medical expenses for the youngest son, Sean.

Monday morning our lives shifted dramatically. Around 2 am I heard noises upstairs. I assumed it was the dog but went up to check since he is our old boy that sometimes struggles.

What I found was our 17 year old son Sean, on the floor between his bed and nightstand with blood on his shoulders, forehead and mouth. His waking up was terrifying as he did not know where he was or who I was and was full of fear and adrenaline. We called 911 and did our best to keep him safe. It turns out he had his first ever gran mal seizure. After the ER visit at 3:00 am they sent us home to stay near him and make appts for an MRI, neurologist and primary care.

At 9:00 am he again had another seizure in his sleep and we called 911 immediately. Another visit to the ER led to an MRI on site.

Sean has been diagnosed with a brain AVM in his occipital region. It is basically a tangle of blood vessels that have most likely been present since birth and this was his bodies warning that something is going wrong.

Seans seizures are currently being controlled by anti-seizure medication but he needs neurosurgery ASAP to remove the AVM that should stop the seizures and hopefully prevent the possibility of the unthinkable, hemorrhages, aneurisms or strokes.

We have been reffered to the surgeon we need in seattle and we were moving full speed ahead until we found out he cannot accept our insurance.

Turns out only children’s hospital and a Kaiser hospital on Capital Hill in seattle accepts our insurance. But Children’s Hospital is referring us to Dr. Kim at Harborview in seattle. He has much experience with this rare surgery that sean needs to get this ticking time bomb out of his brain.

I only have so much fight left in me for insurance as time is a huge factor and I am absolutely prepared to make this happen with or without Kaiser covering it. I’m not messing around with my kids life and a delicate, rare brain surgery!

If this is the man that can do it. He is the only one, or someone with his same expertise is the only one I am letting touch our son.

The stress and fear is beyond compare. That said sean is stable on the anti-seizure medication, his tongue that got all chewed up is healing and he can finally eat and speak. I am on hyper vigilant mom mode desperately trying to make things happen as fast as possible.

Dr. Kim has reached out to us to see Sean. Insurance is what is in our way but, like I said, I will not get stuck in beaurocracy when it comes to our sons life. Tomorrow I get back on the phones and advocate and demand action.
