Eye treatment for George

My name is George and I’ve dealt with most challenges in life. But the prospect of dealing with my rapidly deteriorating vision and knowing that I can’t see – or play with – my two young sons, is something that is too much for me to handle. Which is why I’m reaching out to the gofundme community in an effort to raise money to cover medical and travel expenses to help save what’s left of my vision.

 

I suffer from Usher’s syndrome which means that in addition to being deaf, I also have an eye disorder called retinitis pigmentosa, or RP. RP causes night-blindness and a loss of peripheral vision (side vision) through the progressive degeneration of the retina.

 

I started to notice my night vision go when I was 18 and by the time I was in my 30’s I started to get really nervous about driving, as my vision gradually got worse. I had to relinquish my driver’s licence about 4 years ago and nowadays need to use a cane if I’m in crowded places.

 

There is a vision restoration centre (https://www.restore-vision.com/) in Germany that introduces a new form of therapy called Therapeutic Stimulation that uses electrical stimulation to "wake up" the optic nerves and hopefully stop the progression of the disease.

 

My wife and I have two sons (Oliver 7 and Thomas 5 years’ old) whom we dearly love and cherish. I am hopeful that this treatment stops for deterioration of my eyesight because I want to be able to enjoy watching the boys play soccer when they are older. Not to mention the more basic need of being able to provide for them.

 

At this time we are seeking assistance with raising $10K to cover the cost for the medical expenses / therapy and related travel expenses to travel from Adelaide, Australia to Berlin, Germany. I am booked in for a 2 week treatment in January 2018 I am hopeful that this two-week session will at least stop further decline of my eyesight.

 

However, this treatment is not covered by medicare, which is where the page comes in. Any donations will go towards covering the costs of treatment (approx. $8000), flights and accommodation.
