Eyes for Gabriel

My nephew Gabriel was born with WAGR syndrome which is a very rare syndrome affecting 1 in 1 million individuals and can affect many parts of the body. Gabriel has aniridia which is an absence of the iris in the eyes, leaving only the pupils. This causes his eyes to be sensitive to light, hard to focus and have overall poor vision as he is considered to be legally blind.
Just after his 1st birthday we found out he had Wilms tumor (part of WAGR syndrome) which is a rare form of kidney cancer. He has had to go through chemotherapy treatments and eventually had his left kidney removed. By the age of 11, WAGR syndrome and it’s effects had put him through four major operations.
Through all of this, and now at the age of 16, Gabriel remains optimistic and he’s a kid with a heart of gold. He’s received citizenship awards at school, is always trying to make people laugh and he is a big Detroit Tigers fan. His mom has put everything she can into improving his quality of life and it shows in his demeanor. He now has an amazing opportunity to get eSight glasses. eSight is a Toronto based company that has developed the technology to allow legally blind users to see again through a pair of glasses. The cost for a single pair is $9,995. Gabriel recently had the chance to try on a pair and it was like he was seeing the world for the first time. He normally can only read specialized block letter text and with the glasses he was able to read regular text. He has only ever been able to see up close and with the glasses he could see far away. These glasses would open up a whole lot of possibilities that he could have never imagined before.
I am asking for your help to make a boy’s dream come true and give Gabriel the “eyes” he was never born with, so that he may enjoy life the way we can. This is a major opportunity for him as his journey is never truly over. He still has to live with one kidney and will have the threat of cancer and WAGR syndrome for the rest of his life.
