Six months ago what was supposed to be a routine visit to get some allergy meds turned out to be a day that I know I will never forget. Within an hour my girlfriend Rita, a Nurse Practitioner grad student and full time nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, was admitted to MGH with a large tumor found above her left lung. Tests later determined that Rita was diagnosed with something called T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (T-Cell ALL) which is an aggressive cancer in the white blood cells and bone marrow.
While yoga classes, dinners out, work and other areas of her life have been put on hold for a bit, Rita has been fighting gallantly day in and day out through multiple rounds of Chemotherapy as well as other treatments. Over the last 6 months Rita's parents, family, friends and myself (her boyfriend) have wholeheartedly taken on the roles of caretakers, support network and hopefully providing a much-needed escape from the daily grind that is Cancer! While Rita, who has proven to be one of the most physically and emotionally strong people that I know, pushes through treatment and every day of this challenge in her life, it seems like the least we can do is come together and show her our support.
My goal is to show Rita how much we care by coming together to do what we can to help offset some of the brutal costs that come with Leukemia as well as donating a portion of the funds raised to research cures for this devastating disease.
Thank you to everyone for reaching out to Rita, her family and me. So many of you have offered a helping hand no matter what the task, and I believe this is where we can truly come together to make a big difference.
