eXXpedition Round the World - Sofia Nogués

2 YEARS. 30 VOYAGES. 300 WOMEN - and I get to be one of them!!

I have the privilege to join the eXXpedition all-women team sailing across the world on a very important mission: raising awareness on the impact of microplastics in the ocean. For those who don’t know it already, this is incredibly important to me. As an eXXpedition crew member aboard Yacht Discovery, I will sail from Aruba to Panama this December 2019, doing research on microplastics in the ocean, trolling for plastics and documenting the process. Our aim is twofold:

1. To raise awareness of the impact of plastic waste by making the unseen seen
2. To promote women in science because women are still underrepresented in STEM

To make the expedition possible, each crew member must contribute to the cost of the voyage. Overall, I need to contribute £4000 to the voyage + travel expenses. Between my savings and your wonderful help, I’m hoping to raise it in the next six months!

You can either make a donation (and I'll send you a thankyou postcard during the expedition) or you can buy something from my fundraising etsy shop:

Why?

I have been sailing since I was six years old and I love the sea. I live in a city that is right by the Mediterranean and I go surfing, snorkelling and sailing every chance I get. I can’t remember the first time I wore my snorkeling goggles, but I remember seeing wonderful things. Unfortunately, that is changing rapidly with the invasion of plastic waste ending up in our seas. That’s why I’ve been on a mission to reduce plastic waste and as part of the eXXpedition team, I will be sharing insights on plastic pollution and why it’s one of the greatest unseen threats to our marine environment. Microplastics are ever more present in the ocean and they act as a sponge for toxins that are then ingested by organisms and animals. And ultimately, they go up the food chain to us!

After eXXpedition:

Because a plastic bottle takes 450 years to decompose if it ends up in the wrong bin, when I come back from sailing between Aruba and Panama, I will:

– Design workshops to educate both young and older people on the impact of plastic waste
– Invite people to a makers space → BYOPlastic and we’ll make stuff!
– Write stories on eXXpedition, women onboard and our fight against plastic

About me

I’m a passionate storyteller trying to change the world a bit at a time. I studied journalism for that precise reason, because I love writing and making every word meaningful. I’m also passionate about the sea (as mentioned before) and I strongly believe in protecting it. My journey with eXXpedition will be about telling everyone about the impact of plastic waste and then, what each and everyone of us can do to stop this.

More about eXXpedition

Since 2014, eXXpedition  has been running all-women sailing voyages with a focus on plastics and toxics in our ocean. Over 100 multidisciplinary crew members have been sailing on 11 voyages completing citizen science, community outreach and exploring how they can apply their skills to plastic pollution.

MISSION

– Raise awareness of the devastating impact of single-use plastic and toxics in the world’s oceans

– Celebrate women in science, leadership and adventure

– Create a community of female, multidisciplinary, changemakers and inspiring global ambassadors to tackle plastic pollution and its environmental and health impacts

– Champion and contribute to innovative scientific research to tackle the crisis.

Unseen women: There is also a lack of diversity in gender and race role models in both STEM professions and in exploration / sports events. We would like to assemble a crew of inspiring female role models and help address the balance.

Unseen pollution: While there is no scientific consensus, there is an evidence base building that environmental exposure from chemicals is impacting women’s health. We would like to better understand the links between health of the environment and of our bodies.

Unseen solutions: Cleaning up the plastic is one approach, but what’s needed is multidisciplinary action. We aim to encourage tackling the ocean plastic from every angle, particularly stemming the flow of plastic at the source, before it reaches the sea, in new and innovative ways.
