Ahoi Earthlings and Ocean-lovers!
Born and raised in a sailing town in the Aegean, my curiosity in the ocean started as a child. My father – a captain – shared his love for the ocean – naming me Derya from daryā (Old Persian drayah), meaning ‘sea’ or ‘ocean’. My biography is intimately linked to the sea. I started studying marine science and then went on to a PhD in Earth Sciences. My research evolves around the reconstruction of the past motions of the Earth's tectonic plates.
I am stoked to have been selected as 1 of 10,000 applicants to sail as one of the 10 crew on eXXpedition round the world Leg 9 in April, 2020 in the Pacific Ocean on a 72 foot scientific exploration vessel. We will be doing research on plastics in the ocean. With this expedition we hope to ignite public support on this issue of microplastics in our oceans, to inspire others to take action, and to promote women in science, leadership and adventure.
eXXpedition aims to “make the unseen seen”, from the toxins in our bodies to the toxins in the seas. As part of the eXXpedition crew I will participate in biomonitoring with the UN founded initiative ‘Safe Planet‘ to assess personal exposure to known toxic substances (fluorinated compounds, PCBs, pesticides, PBDEs and dioxin).
I am now raising funds for the trip costs (my berth on the sailing boat,) equipment expenses and post-cruise events.
How can you contribute?
⁃ Donate your coins from bottle deposits
⁃ Share your story about the ocean and/or being a women in STEM for me to take on board eXXpedition as ‘message in a biodegradable bottle’. I will be collecting these to take on board.
⁃ Share my eXXpedition story (through social media platforms, post voyage seminars, film screenings) to maximise the impact of the voyage.
- Organize a beach clean-up in your local community - join me for one.
- Help me to generate video material of the expedition
Anyone who makes a donation (>10 Euros or equivalent) will receive a postcard from the trip (though I'll need your mailing address). Original artwork made from plastics collected during the expedition will be sent to anyone who donates >100 Euros (or equivalent)!
