Time has come for another project. I am departing in just over three weeks, on May 9th, 2018 for an extensive five week visit to Kenya and Tanzania. The purpose of this trip is to research whether it is plausible for me to stay in the region for extended duration in the future, with intent to open or supervise a facility for orphaned children.
There are numerous things in the area I need to get familiarized with. The climate, specifically whether I can endure the unrelenting equatorial sun, without the western amenities. How to cope with local diseases. Where and what kind of residential properties and land are available. What is the cost of residency. Laws, regulations, and how the social services operate.
This will require substantial transit, translation (my knowledge of Swahili is basic, as is the English of most locals), assistance, and appointments. As I’ve learned before, getting to an interview may take several days or not happen at all due to miscommunication, differing concept of time, road conditions, or individuals simply being overextended with their existing duties. So I’m keeping my goals, and their order fluid.
The main agenda is:
1. Visit at least two children’s homes in each country to observe and interview the management or find opportunity for future employment or volunteering. There are dozens of orphanages in the area that I have contacted. Where I visit depends on their availability. I will post updates as I learn more.
2. Interview a social services representative about child care and placement.
3. Find out everything else through experience and word of mouth. Including property values and rental prices, because realtors as such may not exist.
This is where I need your invaluable support. I am not sponsored by any organizations, this is a self-funded endeavor. I have purchased the airfare and all the relevant visas, immunizations and malaria prophylactic. I will be staying on the spare surfaces of some locals I’ve met during a previous visit, and figuring out the rest of my lodging as I traverse.
I am seeking your support to raise $2000 to cover:
- Visits to several children’s homes
- Visit to Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya
- Local transportation in Kenya
- Local transportation in Tanzania
- Ground transit between the two countries
- Interpreter compensation
This is not an “all or nothing” campaign, which means the funds will be available and tremendously helpful whether or not the financial goal is reached. No amount is too small or shameful. EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS and will be used appropriately!
