Some of you may not have already heard; some of you are just getting the news. Carol Sowders Keithley's husband Michael was taken to Floyd Memorial Hospital yesterday with congestive heart failure. He is in the ICU. It was all very sudden and, naturally, he has a battery of tests being done as we speak to diagnose the full scope of his condition. Having been through this myself, with my husband Michael (2 heart attacks, quintuple bypass, 2 stents), I can not even begin to tell you the gamut of emotions you go through watching your loved one in such serious condition. In addition to the emotional and physical strain on the spouse, at some point (when the shock of it all subsides a bit) you begin to wonder what you'll need to do to help them once they get home and how you'll even manage to do it. The realization of your finances then comes into play...although, trust me when I say, you're main concern is the health and well being of your loved one.
For those of us who live away, there seems so little we can do, but what we CAN DO is ease their burden a bit with financial help. Carol's just starting her real estate career and, clearly hasn't yet built a clientele to support them. Michael has been the sole breadwinner (since Carol employment of 20+ years of loyalty with the same law firm was so abruptly "downsized"...aka you're fired.) While they do have some medial insurance, it's the bare bones and most certainly will cover little more than a bandaid or two or a steri strip.
Like most of you, I've known Carol and Mike for a lifetime. In all of that time, no matter their struggles, they have never asked for a dime from anyone. Nor have they asked for assistance for the government in anyway. They've managed to work it out on their own devices. This is where we...as her loving and compassionate friends come in.
