<div>Hi there, I am Claudia from Assange Support Berlin. Over the past years we have continuously organized protest and film screenings in support of Julian Assange. As you know, he's been freed in June. But our work for press freedom is far from over. Why? Julian Assange is free but the Espionage Act is still working. Targeting people in and out of the US. What does it mean for journalists, publishers and whistleblowers? Worldwide? And what does it mean for everyone of us? We have conceived an explainer video....

<div>Julian Assange had to plead guilty to one count of espionage to get free. The US Espionage Act has so far operated under the radar of public scrutiny. The recent release of Julian Assange has now brought it into the media spotlight for all to see.
</div>
<div>Before the law falls into oblivion again, we would like to shed more light on it instead with an explainer video. Together with Raja, we conceived an entertaining 3-minutes-cartoon video on this largely unknown piece of US legislation. We listed affected persons:
</div>
<div>Whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning, but also much less known ones like Joshua Schulte or Daniel Hale served or are serving long prison sentences only because of this law. Edward Snowden is charged under this law, that is why he cannot return home to the US: The Espionage Act equates journalism with espionage, and excludes invoking the public interest. He would not be allowed to talk about the motivation of his disclosures to inform the public of worldwide mass surveillance.

<div>Moreover, the US also uses the Espionage Act beyond its own territory, but does not grant First Amendment rights to those so targeted, they cannot rely on the US right to free speech. This is what we see in the Assange case: An Australian working in Europe was charged for violating a US law.

<div>We want to ask: Who gets caught next? And what is at stake for all of us?
</div>

Zusammen mit Raja Stutz habe ich in den letzten Jahren kontinuierlich Proteste und Filmvorführungen zur Unterstützung von Julian Assange organisiert (<a href="https://freeassange-berlin.de" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><a href="https://freeassange-berlin.de" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://freeassange-berlin.de</a></a>). Wie Sie wahrscheinlich wissen, ist er im Juni freigelassen worden. Aber unsere Arbeit für die Pressefreiheit ist noch lange nicht vorbei.

<div>Und warum? Julian Assange ist frei, aber das Spionagegesetz ist immer noch in Kraft. Es zielt auf Menschen innerhalb und außerhalb der USA ab.
</div>
<div>Was bedeutet das für Journalisten, Verleger und Whistleblower? Weltweit? Und: Was bedeutet es für jeden von uns?
</div>
<div>Julian Assange musste sich in einem Anklagepunkt der Spionage schuldig bekennen, um frei zu kommen. Das US-Spionagegesetz hat bisher unter dem Radar der Öffentlichkeit operiert. Die kürzliche Freilassung von Julian Assange hat es nun für alle sichtbar ins Licht der Medien gebracht.

<div>Bevor das Gesetz wieder in Vergessenheit gerät, möchten wir es mit einem Erklärvideo näher beleuchten, auf unterhaltsame Weise und im Cartoon-Stil dieses Gesetz einem größeren Publikum näherbringen. Betroffene mit Namen nennen:
</div>
<div>Whistleblower wie Chelsea Manning, aber auch weit weniger bekannte wie Joshua Schulte oder Daniel Hale verbüßten oder verbüßen noch nur aufgrund dieses Gesetzes lange Haftstrafen. Edward Snowden wird unter diesem Gesetz angeklagt, deshalb kann er nicht in die USA zurückkehren: Das Spionagegesetz setzt Journalismus mit Spionage gleich und schließt die Berufung auf das öffentliche Interesse aus. Er darf vor Gericht nicht über seine Motivation sprechen, die Öffentlichkeit mit seinen Enthüllungen über die weltweite Massenüberwachung zu informieren.

<div>Darüber hinaus wenden die USA das Spionagegesetz auch außerhalb ihres eigenen Hoheitsgebiets an, gewähren aber denjenigen, die auf diese Weise ins Visier genommen werden, keine Rechte nach dem ersten Verfassungszusatz, so dass sie sich nicht auf das US-Recht auf freie Meinungsäußerung berufen können. Das sehen wir im Fall Assange: Ein Australier, der in Europa arbeitet, wurde wegen Verstoßes gegen ein US-Gesetz angeklagt.

<div>Wir wollen fragen: Wer ist als nächstes dran? Und was steht für uns alle auf dem Spiel?
