"History of Information Technology" exhibition at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland

The Finnish Computer Museum is located in Jyväskylä, Finland.

The museum has created a new exhibition at the University of Jyväskylä. This History of Information Technology exhibition presents how technology has evolved over the years. Now  the Finish Computer Museum needs help. We want to bring this exhibition online for virtually anyone to view. Please, join us to make it possible for everyone to become acquainted with the history of information technology by participating in this crowdfunding campaign.

What is our computer museum?

The Finnish Computer Museum was founded in 1985. Its activities are the responsibility of the Finnish Computer Science Association, which is a non-profit association. Active members are current and retired IT professionals who volunteer their time and efforts to the museum. The association collects and stores equipment and other material related to data processing. The museum's equipment is from the early years of Finnish information technology history thru the 1990s. The collection is recognized as quite significant, there are several machines that are not found anywhere else in Finland. The unique collection includes, for example, 5 computers which were among the first computer models in Finland. One rarity in the collection is the computer from Ukraine (former Soviet Union) of which only two have survived in the world. The Finnish Computer Museum is the only museum in Finland where you can get acquainted with historic information technology by seeing it yourself.

The museum's website is http://suomentietokonemuseo.fi/. The website is in Finnish but by browsing it you can get a picture of our museum's collections.  If your browser supports translation from Finnish, many of the articles translate well.

Why help our computer museum?

Information technology has played a significant role in Finland's recent history and keeping that history alive is important. We want to show the younger generations what the first computers in Finland were like and what they were used for. There have been really big changes in information technology over the past 60 years. The evolution from huge room filling machines to pocket smartphones is amazing, and sharing that amazement with our youngs is priceless.

The museum co-operates with various educational institutions. Groups of students make study visits to the history of information technology. It is also valuable to know the history of computing technology.

“The Finnish Computer Museum has a key role to play in preserving the cultural heritage of the Finnish IT industry.  The Finnish Data Processing Museum Association, which e.g. collects and stores data processing equipment  creates something precious as a the mediator and producer of  this technology heritage in the world” Marjo Mikkola, Museum Director, Technology Museum of Finland.

Why do we need crowdfunding help?

Our needs are many diverse.
In the other hand we need to stay alive at new place and the other hand we try to add some working devices to our collection.
We had an old place literally inside the rock but we had to move away from there cause University of Jyväskylä need that space to their own books. We were subtenants of  the University of Jyväskylä.

We want to increase the visibility of the museum's collections and we have built the “History of Information Technology” exhibition for the University of Jyväskylä. Producing websites and videos costs money but when done well, we can tell share a lot more about the devices and their history.

Public support for small museums has been declining year by year. With your help through crowdfunding, we can make this exhibition virtual, on the internet, where it is available to anyone interested for free.  Teachers can access it right in their classrooms!  You can contribute to this it time travel by supporting our campaign.

What will we do with your gift?

If we can raise € 3,000 we can make a website with pictures and texts from the exhibition.

If we can raise € 6000 we can make  a good nice service platform in our exhibition.

If we can raise € 15,000 we can also produce video presentations of the history of the equipment and its use.

With a larger sum we could restore a few devices back to life.
After all a working machine or part of it is a greater experience than just a device.
